Labor Outreach Project Manager – Renew Oregon – Portland, OR

OVERVIEW

Renew Oregon is the campaign to move our state toward a clean energy economy. This is a multi-year effort to advance policy and significantly increase public support for addressing climate change. We can spur national action on climate change through state and regional policies that align environmental and economic objectives.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The Labor Outreach Project Manager will be part of the team implementing a highly ambitious plan to build the climate movement in Oregon. This position is housed at Renew Oregon, working in close partnership with the Oregon BlueGreen Alliance, the Oregon AFL-CIO and other labor and community organizations. The Labor Project Manager will work with union members and leaders to assure that labor is an active participant and leader in efforts to address climate change and in the Renew Oregon campaign.

Core duties include:

Work with union and other Renew Oregon partners to effectively support efforts that build the clean energy economy in ways that reduce carbon emissions, create quality, family-sustaining jobs and promote an equitable and sustainable prosperity.
Outreach to individual local unions to assess interest in climate policy and action and to educate members about the Renew Oregon campaign.
Support the ongoing work and leadership of the BlueGreen Alliance, focusing in particular on education and consensus-building around climate policy issues.
Develop and deliver educational workshops and presentations about climate change and the clean energy economy to union members and, where appropriate, to other interested organizations and leaders.
Engage union leaders in local and regional dialogue to align labor and environmental priorities.
Identify and amplify the stories of union members and leaders who support climate action.
Coordinate events and activities for the Renew Oregon campaign.
Assess partner group capacity and identify potential leaders within these groups; create and execute plans based on that assessment.
Write and execute a workplan that complements the overall campaign goals.

In addition to the labor project work, the Labor Outreach Project Manager will also have additional duties that serve the overall campaign (about .25 FTE), which may include responsibility for an additional organizational outreach portfolio, and other field activities as needed.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with union members and leaders in a variety of industries and occupations.
Familiarity with clean energy, climate change and other related issues.
Record of engaging in a coalition of diverse and unlikely allies – and motivating real, measurable engagement and participation from that coalition
Experience in a political or education campaign preferred, especially with regards to developing, training and empowering volunteers in a campaign setting.
Familiarity and experience working with communities of color in campaigns or on climate/economic issues.
Strong written and verbal skills, including public speaking.
Excellent interpersonal and team skills.
Experience with or ability to quickly learn VAN, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Docs.
Ability to travel regularly throughout Oregon.
