Civic Engagement Coordinator – 826LA – Los Angeles

About the Position
826LA is seeking a Civic Engagement Coordinator to support our civic and community engagement programming and initiatives throughout Los Angeles (East, West, & South LA) through creative civic and community organizing, volunteer recruitment and stewarding of partnerships through high schools, colleges and community organizations. This position reports in-person with travel to our different sites and offices requested as needed.

Position responsibilities:
Supports outreach, ongoing recruitment, onboarding of volunteers from communities surrounding our Writing Centers and Labs
Lead volunteer orientations, info sessions, and trainings at 826LA centers, Writers’ Rooms, and in surrounding communities
Identifies opportunities to maximize the capacity of the Senior Community Engagement Manager, including taking on time sensitive/reactive projects and requests, suggesting different systems and/or procedures to increase efficiency
Schedule and attend tabling opportunities at community fairs and events on behalf of 826LA and the Time Travel Mart.
Build, manage, and steward relationships with high schools, colleges and universities, and community organizations to bolster our programs and serve our mission
Conduct community outreach at local churches, businesses, community centers, schools, and other stakeholder organizations to broaden 826LA’s reach
Supports coordination and implementation of volunteer appreciation and retention campaigns
Supports all civic and community engagement team-led initiatives, including best practices, training materials, DEI goals and practices, and is responsible for the implementation of these practices for our community engagement programs
Updates and maintains partnership and civic engagement database and tracking systems
Flexibility to work occasionally on evenings and weekends as necessary
Reports to the Senior Community Engagement Manager

Ideal candidates for this role will have the following qualities:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, or 2-3 years experience in civic and community organizing
Experience with Google Workspace, Zoom, and Salesforce
Ability to converse and write in Spanish fluently
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
A commitment to incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our volunteer outreach, recognition, and management efforts;
Strong ability to multitask, be flexible, and solve problems creatively in a fast-paced environment;
Exceptional communication skills, both written and interpersonal;
Excellent organizational skills;
A results-oriented spirit, and a willingness to grow and build toward the success of programs;
A passion for writing, education, and especially 826LA’s mission.

Salary and Benefits:
This is a non-exempt, full-time position. Workdays are Monday through Friday, and the flexibility to work occasionally on evenings and weekends is necessary. Benefits include 15 days of vacation for the first 2 years, 20 days after that, time off for most school and federal holidays, participation in 826LA’s health care plan at 100% coverage as well as 50% coverage for family members, a full coverage dental plan, 401K plan with employer match after one year of service, and life insurance plan. The salary range for a Coordinator is $40K – $45K, commensurate with experience.
