Site Manager – Homeless Children’s Playtime Project – Washington, DC

The Homeless Children’s Playtime Project (HCPP) seeks a strong, diverse, energetic, skilled and child-focused leader to join our team as a Site Manager. This is an amazing opportunity for someone with demonstrated experience in the field who is looking to gain additional experience managing a program, supervising and training volunteers, nurturing community partnerships, and working directly with children and families experiencing homelessness in Washington​,​ DC.

HCPP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing trauma-informed and educational play programs, as well as advocating for children living in emergency and transitional housing programs. Playtime’s mission is to bring joy, a therapeutic environment, and access to community resources to children who are experiencing homelessness. We are seeking to hire a Site Manager to work 20-25 hours per week​, including leading programs at two transitional housing programs on​ Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:45 p.m. as well as office hours during the day. All locations for this position are located in Columbia Heights. Previous experience working in a direct​-​service setting, leading a children’s program and supervising others is expected.​

Responsibilities include:

Overseeing three evening play programs from 6:00-8:45 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in two transitional housing programs (required availability all three evenings),

Implementing HCPP’s play-based curriculum nightly​, including creating and supervising age-appropriate guided activities,

​Carefully tracking and managing records and outcomes for play programs using HCPP’s​ new database, meeting deadlines consistently,

​Helping to ensure​ that children’s ​educational, social and emotional ​needs are met​ by working with parents and staff to issue referrals to service providers for mentoring, tutoring, developmental assessments, summer camps, and after school activities, etc.

Leading volunteers, including facilitating ongoing trainings to bolster their​ ability to help children learn and heal through play in a trauma-informed environment,

​Educating shelter staff and parents about our model through presentations and orientations,

Maintaining the playroom’s norms and expectations, including behavior management skills with a focus on positive discipline, consistency, redirection, and taking the time to determine each child’s needs,

Helping to recruit for and lead Playtime Project’s field trips with volunteers and children,
Identifying children with special emotional, behavioral or developmental needs, speaking with parents and staff and making appropriate referrals

Successful applicants will possess a range of attributes, including:

Demonstrated ability to engage children that span a variety of ages in group learning opportunities,
Experience leading and motivating a team, including facilitation skills and the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback,
Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse groups of people,
Hard working, mature, efficient, meets deadlines, is incredibly organized, responsive and trustworthy,
Strong professional, problem-solving, verbal and written communication, and time management skills,
Experience with tracking program outcomes, such as collecting observational data and administering surveys,
A Bachelor’s degree with experience or at least five years working in the child development field is required.

Approximately 10 hours per week will be spent at the shelter sites and 10-15 hours/week will be spent in Playtime Project’s office planning and collaborating with colleagues during normal business hours at a mutually agreed upon schedule. Occasional weekend or out-of-office hours may be scheduled for special events.
