Site Coordinator – Elementary School – Communities In Schools of Seattle

Position Summary:

The Site Coordinator (SC) marshals resources necessary to address the social and emotional needs of students who are at risk of dropping out of school. Through the coordination of individual and group interventions, as well as prevention activities, the SC is a key player in helping students toward graduation. The SSC provides confidential, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive interventions, services and support to students needing additional internal and external resources in order to make a positive connection to school. The SC forms partnerships with the community and other agencies to help provide these resources. The school-based interventions will improve academic achievement and reduce truancy for the students served. Responsibilities may change somewhat based on the needs of the program.

Position Status: Exempt, .442 FTE (20hrs/wk for 46 weeks, 6 weeks off in the summer). Some evening and weekend work required.

Responsibilities Include:

School-based Services: 75% of time

Overall program management of the assigned CIS site: Coordinate implementation of the annual site operations plan in partnership with the site. Ensure that needs assessment, service delivery, data tracking, and evaluation/reporting takes place.

Secure community support and partners to meet school and students’ needs: Successfully build relationships with community members and service providers for identified program needs. Identify and incorporate various community resources that best meet the needs of the school site and its students.

Coordinate linkages to needed academic, physical or social services to children in need: Provide overall scheduling and coordination of volunteer/student activities. Maintain regular contact with collaborating agencies. Serve as a communication conduit for gathering/exchanging information.

Intervention and referrals for at-risk children: Assess students’ academic, social and emotional needs. Provide and/or coordinate individual and group intervention for children affected by poverty, mental or physical health concerns, domestic violence, homelessness, as well as youth involved in foster care. Connect students with SeattlePublic School resources or other community-based resources, as appropriate. Coordinate prevention activities. In collaboration with school staff, monitor Student Learning Plans for targeted students.

Coordinate and run after school academic activities in collaboration with volunteers and others at the school.

Provide at least 8 school-wide activities during the school year, in collaboration with other partners.

Provide support to parents/families through home visits, activities, basic needs and more.

Other duties: Supervise volunteers, including AmeriCorps member. Support and participate in school orientations, open houses, and parent events. Serve as a resource to the whole school and consult with staff. Follow procedures for referral processes; assess student needs and strengths related to social, emotional and behavioral issues. Adhere to procedures regarding communication and coordination with teachers, administrative and referring staff including confidentiality. Maintain effective relationships with students, their families, school staff and administration. Other duties as assigned.

Evaluation and Documentation: 10% of time

Document progress and track student and family outcomes in areas targeted by the Student Learning Plan, in addition to tracking attendance, discipline and achievement data.
Ensure accurate documentation.
Track outputs and outcomes to meet CIS grant reporting requirements.
Produce CIS quarterly and annual reports.
Provide program information and overview of accomplishments to the Executive Director, CIS board, and District personnel as appropriate.

General Administrative Tasks: 15% of time

Consult with school administrators, parents and staff as requested or appropriate to the work with students.
Participate in interdisciplinary meetings with school staff, the CIS team, and other resource agencies involved in collaborative services.
Conduct outreach and develop partnerships with other agency service providers.
Participate in CIS planning and program evaluation.
Represent CIS at events and meetings, as necessary.
Work collaboratively with all CIS staff to maintain a positive CIS image; Understand and demonstrate the CIS mission, goals and initiatives within the community.

Required Qualifications:

AA degree with five plus years’ experience working with teens or young adults, Bachelor’s degree with three years’ experience working with teens or young adults, or Master’s degree with one year of experience, or equivalent.
Strong youth engagement and relationship-building skills, particularly with at-risk children.
Commitment to social justice.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with schools, students, parents, community representatives and the general public.
Excellent facilitation skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Flexibility, collaborative spirit.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Valid Washington state driver’s license, access to reliable transportation and proof of adequate vehicle insurance coverage.
Ability to lift 25lbs on an occasional basis.
Commitment to helping young people stay in school and prepare for life.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in education, social services, counseling, juvenile justice, or anti-poverty.
Knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, economic status, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
Comfort and competency in a multi-cultural environment.
Ability to speak in a language in addition to English, especially Spanish, Vietnamese and/or Somali.
Training in grief counseling with adolescents.
Advanced CPR/First Aid Training.
