Position Overview:
StoryCorps’ Human Resources department is a dedicated group of professionals who support management and staff in meeting the organization’s ambitious goals, while making StoryCorps a great place to work. We’re looking for a skilled HR professional to join our team to manage all recruitment activities and lead various people and organizational culture initiatives from our Brooklyn, NY headquarters.

As a key member of StoryCorps’ HR department, the Manager, People & Culture will be responsible for recruiting, supporting, and developing a growing staff of 90+ full-time and part-time employees in multiple locations across the country, including smaller teams based in our traveling MobileBooth, and at our Chicago, Atlanta, and San Francisco StoryBooths.
StoryCorps records, shares, and preserves stories from a diverse range of voices; some of our programs include our Griot Initiative to preserve stories of African Americans, our Historias Initiative to record the life experiences of Latinos, and our OutLoud Initiative, focused on the voices of the LGBTQ community. We are also committed to hiring staff who reflect this diversity, and the Manager will be instrumental in leading the HR department’s efforts to recruit, retain, and support a diverse workforce. In addition to leading recruitment and organizational culture activities, the Manager oversees employee onboarding & training, and supports the Director on employee relations matters. This individual must exhibit the utmost professional maturity, emotional intelligence, and sensitivity to the confidential nature of Human Resources information.

Recruitment (60%):

Manages recruitment activities for all positions, including:

Determines recruitment strategy to ensure StoryCorps recruits diverse, talented staff and fills open positions with well-qualified people in a timely manner
Oversees all stages of recruitment (writing job descriptions, conducting phone screens, interviews, and reference checks, and communicating offers and rejections) and provides support and guidance to managers throughout the hiring process
Manages StoryCorps HR’s social media presence (LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Idealist, etc,) and collaborates with the Marketing & Communications department to create and promote StoryCorps’ employer brand

Onboarding/Orientation/Training (30%):

Oversees new hire onboarding/orientation schedule and activities, and leads HR Orientations for new staff
Supports other staff training & professional development activities as assigned – e.g., develops new trainings, facilitates existing trainings (e.g., new supervisor training), researches and coordinates trainings led by third-party consultants, etc.

Organizational Culture & Employee Relations (10%):

Convenes and leads the StoryCorps “Culture Club,” an interdepartmental group of staff who plan events and activities to support staff inclusion and connectedness, improve interdepartmental communication and collaboration, celebrate milestones and recognize accomplishments, and have fun
Conducts exit interviews with outgoing staff
Supports HR Director, managers, and staff on other employee relations issues, as needed
Develops and implements evaluation tools to assess and improve HR-related programs and practices
Researches and makes recommendations regarding employment-related issues (e.g., HR policies and procedures, HR programs/initiatives, trainings, employee benefits, etc.)
Advises managers and supervisors on HR questions/concerns and responds to employee inquiries regarding HR policies and procedures

Other:

Provides supervisory oversight and direction to one full time HR Specialist responsible for managing the StoryCorps internship program, coordinating onboarding & offboarding processes, coordinating the 80-hour Facilitator Training series, and supporting recruitment, culture, and other HR activities as assigned
Participates in StoryCorps project teams and other interdepartmental efforts
Completes other tasks to support the Human Resources Department and StoryCorps staff, as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree
At least 4 years of HR experience and knowledge of federal and state employment laws
Experience in staff recruitment & assessment
At least 1 year experience providing staff supervision and evaluation
Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills
Impeccable attention to detail
Superb organizational skills and demonstrated ability to function exceptionally in a fast-paced work environment; ability to multi-task while prioritizing important issues
Sound professional ethics and sensitivity to the confidential nature of Human Resources information
Strong people-orientation and emotional intelligence, with demonstrated consensus-building and conflict resolution skills
Proactive problem-solving skills, and the ability to be flexible and adaptable to a growing, changing organizational environment
Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
Cultural humility and the ability to work successfully with diverse groups of people

Preferred:

HR certification or advanced degree in a related field (e.g., MBA, MS in HR Management, etc.)
Demonstrated effectiveness and ability with public speaking, trainings, and presentations
Proficiency on a Mac platform
Fluency in Spanish
