Position Description: The executive director is responsible for leading the Arts Council’s achievement of its mission and strategic and financial objectives, implementing the organization’s strategic plan, and overseeing day-to-day management.

Primary Areas of Focus:

Fund development
Budget development and oversight
Staff development, management, and evaluation
Advocacy on behalf of the Arts Council and Long Beach art community
Fulfillment of strategic objectives

Qualifications:

Successful fundraising and development experience, including with government, foundation, corporate and individual donors.
Robust fiscal management experience.
Excellent human resources, management and communication skills.
Ability to motivate others, set priorities and meet goals and timelines.
Extensive strategic planning, board governance and external relations experience.
Knowledge of and the ability to engage effectively with the diversity of arts and cultural institutions in Long Beach.
5-10 years of executive management experience in arts administration, cultural affairs, or related field; non-profit management experience preferred.
Experience with program development, including large collaborative initiatives.
Master’s degree in an arts or arts-related field highly desired.

Responsibilities:

Carry out the organization’s long-range strategy to achieve its mission, and with consistent, well-organized and timely progress.
Implement the policies and procedures established by the board of directors.

Strengthen relationships with government, foundation, corporate and individual funders and significantly expand fund development program.
Direct advocacy efforts to ensure continued and increased funding for the Arts Council and arts community on the local, regional and national level. Lobby local, regional and state policymaking bodies.
Identify significant issues and trends affecting the environment for cultural growth in the region and shape the organization’s response to current issues, needs and practices.
Serve as primary staff liaison to the board of directors, as well as executive, finance, development and strategic planning committees. Keep the board fully informed and support the board development process.
Work closely with the board to develop long-range financial plans and prepare annual budget forecast.
Manage all staff and consultants, conduct annual employee reviews, develop annual executive director assessment plan and create new management systems as needed.
Develop succession plan.
Maintain a climate that attracts, retains and motivates a talented and diverse staff.
Create and monitor staff policies, procedures and staff development.
Follow federal, state and local laws related to employment, management and financial management.
