Art Enables

Art Enables is an art studio, gallery and employment program located in Washington, DC, dedicated to creating opportunities for artists with disabilities to make and market their honest and compelling artwork. We are a small non-profit serving 30 – 35 artists with disabilities and a budget of under $500,000. We offer our artists the environment, materials, and marketing support they need to succeed as professionals. We leverage the unique nature of visual art to enable creative self-expression, employment, and commercial success for artists with alternative learning styles.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Management:

Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals
Assure the strategic plan and goals of Art Enables are measurable and reflect the needs of the organization; monitors and reports activities and achievements related to goals and objectives
Oversee the Department on Disability Services billing and the relationship with the Department of Human Services to ensure the organization is in complete compliance and exceeding expectations
Actively engage and energize Art Enables’ volunteers, board members, partnering organizations, and funders
Support a strong Board of Directors: build constructive board involvement with the program;
Lead, coach, and develop a three plus member team
Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents
Provide final consent of new artists and, in collaboration with the Service Coordinator, conduct intake interviews

Fundraising & Communications:

Be an external local and national presence that communicates program results with an emphasis on the successes of the artists
Manage the refinement of all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand
Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities
Generate collaborations and partnerships in the community
Structure and oversee financial agreements with cooperating retailers and outside exhibit venues
Oversee all revenue generating events and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and regional expansion while simultaneously retiring building debt

Qualifications

The ED will be thoroughly committed to Art Enables’ mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Experience with fundraising and working with people with disabilities is highly desirable. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

College degree and track record of effective leadership qualities; ability to point specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation
Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
Past success working with a Board of Directors
Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
Sense of humor
Excellence in time-management and delegation skills
Proficient with managing work load with the available space, resources and time available
Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
