Heshima Kenya works to protect and empower young, vulnerable refugee women and girls, including their children, who have been displaced by war and are living alone in Nairobi, Kenya. Our safe shelter, education and life skills programs and community outreach services enable and empower adolescent girls to live healthy lives. As a result of Heshima Kenya’s programs, young women who are often survivors of tremendous adversity and trauma go on to become catalysts for change and leaders within their own communities.

Heshima Kenya is currently seeking a Fall Communications and Events intern. This postion is ideal for a graduate or undergraduate student who is interested in journalism, communications, events, with an interest in international development, human rights, and women’s empowerment.

This role will support Chicago-based community outreach initiatives, office administration and grant research, online communication strategy, and will support the planning and execution of our Fall 2015 fundraising event.

Past and current interns have supported fundraising initiatives, drafted print and online communications, supported aspects of grant writing, designed and implement a social media strategy and assisted in event planning.

Strong writing abilities
Event planning
Ability to work both collaboratively both independently and with a group
Academic or grassroots background in issues pertaining to refugees, international affairs, human rights and sexual and gender-based violence
Sensitivity to diverse cultures

Time commitment

This position will be for 20-30 hours per week.

Due to the nature of the internship, we generally ask that interns be able to commit a 3 – 4 hour block of time in either the morning or afternoon
