Advocacy Press Secretary – Earthjustice Headquarters – San Francisco, CA

The Advocacy Press Secretary will deepen and expand the press coverage of priority Lands Oceans Wildlife Program issues. The Advocacy Press Secretary will pitch stories to national and regional papers, magazines and long-form media outlets, TV and radio stations, and online outlets and blogs. This person would identify media opportunities and pursue them; pitch enterprise, in-depth coverage of Earthjustice’s many issues; develop media lists; and build relationships with journalists who may write about the issues. This person would also help respond to breaking news and draft press releases on a range of Earthjustice issues. S/he will look for opportunities for Earthjustice leadership to earn media on a range of issues.

S/he will work with the Media Director to identify human-interest angles for media pitches and communicate these opportunities to the program staff and work with communications staff, litigators, and policy staff on strategy. This person would write and place op-eds, blogs, and letters to the editor on behalf of Earthjustice leaders and clients/partners, and contribute to the Earthjustice blog and website.

This person will also develop storytelling content and focus on ways to develop interactive and creative digital assets– creating infographics, data visualization graphics, video projects, photo essays, and more – and help produce social media content that accomplishes Lands Oceans Wildlife Program advocacy and media goals.

Responsibilities:
National, Regional and Online Media Relationships:
• Works with Advocacy Communications Manager and Communications team, litigators and program staff, and clients and coalition partners to build and shape media strategy for a range of priority Lands Oceans Wildlife issues.
• Coordinates media strategy work and opportunities with Advocacy Communications Manager, communications staff, litigators, and policy staff.
• Writes and distributes press releases and background materials on cases of interest to national, regional, and web media.
• Actively pitches reporters, writers, and producers at national and regional papers, magazines, TV and radio shows and stations, and online media outlets.
• Identifies opportunities for enterprise, in-depth coverage of the Earthjustice core issues and pursues them.
• Develops and maintains media lists and contacts.
• Develops and implements social media plans around a range of environmental issues, especially Twitter strategy and implementation.
• Develops, writes, and manages production of web content and in-depth web features on high priority issues.
• Develops and works with web and design teams to create compelling digital content in the form of infographics, maps, data visualizations, illustrations, videos, and more.
• Builds relationships with journalists and media influencers who may write about a range of environmental issues.
• Keeps current on national and important regional and web press contacts and develops press lists for organizational use.
• Provides media with regular updates on Earthjustice activities, as appropriate.
• Pitches enterprise, feature-length, in-depth stories.
• Pitches Earthjustice leaders to TV and radio shows.
• Writes materials for Earthjustice website.
• Identifies human-interest angles for media pitches and prepares op-eds, editorial board memos, press releases, and other materials as needed.
• Monitors and reports on media coverage.
• Manages media contractors and contracts additional press support for high priority issues.

Media Training & Message Development:
• Works with program staff to assess media needs and develop appropriate media message.
• Develops talking points for program staff and prepares staff for media interviews.
• May help with media training of staff.

Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or Marketing preferred.
• Five years of experience in reporting or media relations with emphasis on environment or social justice causes preferred.
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
• Outstanding content creation skills and experience creating a range of digital content types.
• Experience managing large web and interactive content projects.
• Experience with online advocacy.
• Experience pitching media.
• Relationships with media and journalists.
• Social media experience and skills, especially Twitter.
• Knowledge and ability to use multimedia communications tools.
