The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is an 80 year-old student-governed and operated non-profit affordable housing cooperative near the University of California at Berkeley. GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Accounts Receivable Bookkeeper oversees the entire accounts receivable operation of the organization. Duties include, but are not limited to, processing residence, boarding, and parking charges, check-in/check-out slips, late fines, and rent credits; balancing daily cash drawers and bank deposits; processing security deposit refunds; balancing monthly reports to General Ledger for various funds; negotiating payment arrangements with current members and monitoring bad debts; interacting regularly with members, parents, and co-op managers to answer questions related to bookkeeping processes and procedures, keeping relevant statistics and reporting to Board or management as necessary; cross-training with Accounts Payable to ensure departmental coverage as necessary, and performing other duties as assigned by the Bookkeeping/Office Supervisor. This position supervises student staff members and volunteers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Qualified applicants must have four years of college and at least two years of bookkeeping experience, including some supervisory experience. We are looking for someone who has a working knowledge of both A/P & A/R Bookkeeping. You must be able to type 60 wpm and use a ten-key calculator quickly and accurately. You must be able to learn new systems and detailed information quickly.

Applicants must have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication and customer service skills. You must have excellent record-keeping/organizational skills and be familiar with proper financial documentation practices. You must be able to work independently, establish priorities, and ensure the timely completion of tasks and projects. You must have the ability to work with a diverse array of people and students in particular. You must be able to work in a fast-paced office environment. Applicants must also have intermediate skills with Microsoft Office Suite, advanced skill using Excel, and the ability to quickly learn and effectively use new accounting databases/software.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This is a full time position with an hourly starting wage of $21.42/hour. Benefits and other conditions of employment are pursuant to an Employee Association contract, which currently provides for annual cost-of-living adjustments, performance-based raises and/or bonuses, health and dental insurance for employee and dependents, life and long-term disability insurance, paid holiday, vacation and sick leave, and paid retirement benefits (after two years).
