Mobile Clinic Bus Driver – San Francisco – Prevent Blindness Northern California

We are looking for a highly motivated, bilingual (English/Spanish) team member to deliver patient centered, culturally appropriate mobile vision services directly to the communities we serve. This is an integral position that demands attention to details, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently. The position requires driving the See Well to Learn (SWTL) Mobile Clinic (re-configured Ford Winnebago RV) to school sites as well as on-site coordination of patient records, patient service, eye exams and glasses selection.
Prevent Blindness Northern California (PBNC), is a 50-year old nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation of sight. We are a team of highly committed, innovative individuals leading prevention programs and initiatives for vision health, with the ultimate goal of preserving all that good vision can afford us.
See Well to Learn is a PBNC initiative that provides free comprehensive eye exams and glasses for low-income preschool children referred from our vision screenings. We are seeking a candidate to not only fulfill the specific responsibilities of the position, but also become a vital part of our team.

Mobile Clinic Bus Driver
Reporting to the SWTL Program Manager, the See Well to Learn (SWTL) Mobile Clinic Eye Driver/Operator is a key position for the See Well to Learn program. Training will be provided to drive a fully equipped mobile eye clinic (re-configured Ford Winnebago RV) as well as training, coordinating eye exams and patient flow on board the eye bus, fitting children for eyeglasses and assisting the optometrist onboard the Mobile Clinic. The SWTL Mobile Clinic Eye Bus Operator and Onsite Coordinator will be the primary staff person responsible for transporting the Mobile Clinic to the scheduled site, setting up eye exam equipment, performing pre-testing, assisting the optometrist, and communicating with parents and school personnel. He/she will also be responsible for monitoring maintenance for the Mobile Clinic and our other Prevent Blindness vehicle (Honda Element), i.e. seeing that fluids are maintained, oil checks performed, etc. The Mobile Clinic Bus Operator will be responsible for various administrative duties related to the SWTL program.

Responsibilities
1) Call schools to arrange parking and coordinate with SFDPT for necessary permits and signage
2) Pick up the Eye Bus at parking lot and drive to designated sites on exam days
3) Park Eye Bus at site and set up equipment for exams
4) Ensure that families who attend the clinic feel comfortable and are well informed about clinic practices and eye exam follow up
5) Coordinate patient flow and communicate with parents and school personnel
6) Perform pretesting and assist the optometrist onboard
7) Enter patient information, pre-test and exam results into electronic medical record system
8) Pack up and secure equipment at day’s end, and return Eye Bus to parking lot
9) Monitor maintenance, mileage and refueling of Eye Bus for Eye Bus and other PBNC vehicles. Fill gas tank of Eye Bus weekly.
10) Keep inventory of supplies and equipment on Eye Bus and ensure that all items are ordered and restocked in a timely manner.
11) Maintain close contact to with Program Coordinator and Manager to report outcomes of Eye Bus clinics
12) Assist in the ordering and delivery of glasses as needed
13) Assist in vision screening and follow up care as needed
14) Attend weekly meetings and perform SWTL administrative tasks at the PBNC office. More office days will be required when Eye Bus is not in operation to maintain full time employment status and support other program activities.

Requirements:
1) Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English and Spanish
2) Undergraduate degree with coursework in social work, public health or community health OR High School diploma and at least two years’ experience in a clinical setting working directly with patients
3) Experience in customer or client service
4) Experience working with community organizations serving children and parents; experience in community health setting preferred
5) Excellent interpersonal skills in order to deal effectively with school personnel, children, medical and support staff, parents and general public
6) Experience in accurate data collection and entry and using computerized data management systems
7) Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
8) Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize tasks and to work under pressure of multiple task at peak times
9) CA Driver’s License and good driving record required (no specialized license required)
10) Familiarity with basic vehicle maintenance
11) Experience driving a recreation vehicle (RV) or other large vehicle preferred, but not required Special Considerations
1) The successful candidate will spend 6-8 hours per day in the compact waiting area of the eye bus working directly with a number of parents and children. Applicants must be able to thrive in working in sometimes noisy, crowded spaces, and maintain a positive and peaceful atmosphere.
