Managing Director – Impact Hub Berkeley – Mission Hub LLC – Berkeley, CA

Mission Hub LLC is a platform of interlocking business units that help social entrepreneurs create sustainable business that drive long-term social and environmental good. It is the holding company for multiple Impact Hub locations – San Francisco, Berkeley, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. – as well as the SOCAP conference series. SOCAP hosts the world’s most successful social enterprise and impact investing event in San Francisco each fall, and has convened over 12,000 people since it began in 2008. Impact Hubs are a shared workspace and events platform for a global community of entrepreneurs, activists, artists, and professionals who believe in the power of business to accelerate positive social and environmental change. The first Impact Hub was founded in London in 2005 and has evolved into a rapidly expanding global network of over 7,000 professional members in 50 shared workspaces (and growing) – from Amsterdam to Johannesburg, Singapore to Sao Paulo. Position Description:

The Managing Director, Berkeley will serve and build Mission Hub’s place-based business unit in Berkeley, CA. As the leading role for culture building, growth and execution, the Managing Director must embody entrepreneurial drive, creativity, strategy and hard work to catalyze a diverse, inclusive, and locally rooted Berkeley membership community. Additionally the Managing Director must be fluent in operations, facilities and financial management with the expectation of meeting or exceeding Mission Hub’s financial goals and objectives.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of Berkeley demographics, and experience and relationships with the local entrepreneurial and social enterprise scene, city business dynamics, the arts community, civic sector realities and opportunities, and key forward-thinking stakeholder networks.

The following are core responsibilities:

Culture Setting:

+ Continue refining and instilling a collaborative and diverse shared physical environment + Empower the members, and encourage them to engage and support one another in their ideas and ventures

+ Oversee the current programming and content strategy for the Berkeley location in collaboration with Mission Hub’s national programming strategy

Community Growth Strategy:

+ Identify and target high value partnerships with the goal of creating a successful membership experience and engagement with the larger Berkeley community + Engagement with business communities, city, arts, and university partners to create events, programming and content for the Impact Hub community

+ Identify opportunities and strengthen existing ties with the Berkeley sustainability and social enterprise community through partnerships and content production

+ Integrate the Impact Hub national marketing and communication strategy as a complement to the unique qualities of the Berkeley community

+ Understand, implement and execute community organizing recruitment, visibility and event management principles, philosophy and disciplines

+ Identify, recruit and secure anchor organizations

Management and Leadership:

+ Manage and lead the Berkeley team + Recruitment and hiring of additional team members

+ Learning and development with the ability to motivate and continually retain Mission Hub cultural values

+ Coordinate with Mission Hub team for culture alignment and implementation of existing operations, finance, facilities management and accounting systems

+ Regular engagement with cohort of Impact Hub Managing Directors nationally, sharing best practices and aligning national campaigns

Budget and Finance:

+ Develop and manage budget for the location in collaboration with Mission Hub’s Chief Operating Officer and finance department

+ Identify cost savings and revenue generation opportunities as well as identify and communicate strategic expenditure opportunities.

Business Development:

+ Manage, explore and secure new partnership and membership generation opportunities

+ Work with existing and new partners on developing and securing opportunities

+ Outreach to local in-kind partnerships (Food & Beverage, community & business resources, etc)

+ Set and manage staff goals for lead generation

+ Assist Chief Operating Officer in the development of local Advisory Boards

The ideal Managing Director will exhibit the following qualities and provide proof of the following experience:

+ Ability to connect with diverse cultural, social and educational backgrounds

+ Experience creating and managing a budget

+ Entrepreneurial drive and alignment with Impact Hub values

+ Experience working in the Berkeley social, entrepreneurial, environmental, and/or cultural sectors (non-profit experience considered)

+ Professional experience as a manager or director

+ Strong understanding of the Berkeley early-stage business, design and startup scene

+ Strong relationships with stakeholders across all neighborhoods and demographics in Berkeley

+ Creative and dedicated approach towards space, design, and community building

+ Excellency in communicating in English

+ Ability to develop compelling narratives

+ Excellent self-awareness and professionalism

Desired experience and skills:

+ Experience working with and for startups

+ Experience working in a collaborative, startup environment

+ Experience with raising investment and philanthropic capital

+ Experience working in fast-paced, growth-centric environments

+ Fluency with productivity programs (Google Apps, Salesforce and other business productivity programs and software)

+ Knowledge of growing social and environmental sectors

+ Operations and community building background
