Major Gifts Officer – Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) – Chicago, IL

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation’s most effective environmental action group, combining the grassroots power of 1.4 million members and online activists with the courtroom clout and expertise of nearly 500 lawyers, scientists and other professionals to fight for the planet and its people in the halls of Congress, communities across the country, and nations around the globe. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff – a force for nature – work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a Major Gifts Officer to work with the Development team in our Chicago office. This position will help build upon our strong base of support from individuals in Chicago and throughout the Midwest region. The Major Gifts officer will work closely with the Regional Director of Development, Midwest Director, and Director of Land and Wildlife program as well as NRDC leadership and other key staff to raise funds for NRDC’s priority work, which includes advancing clean energy, protecting the Great Lakes and other clean water resources, and conserving wildlife and wild places.

Responsibilities:

Manage a portfolio of current donors
Work with current donors to increase their own giving and to encourage them to introduce NRDC to prospective donors within their networks
Work with colleagues to engage Midwest Council members, other donors, and prospects through meetings, regular communication, lectures, events, field trips, etc.
Build a pool of donors from prospects by meeting with lapsed donors and members with giving potential in Chicago and throughout the Midwest region.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree or higher.
5+ years of fundraising. Major Gift Fundraising experience required.
Demonstrated experience in personal solicitation of major gifts required.
Mandatory skills include: clear, concise and persuasive writing; outstanding verbal and interpersonal communication; strong time management; and consistent attention to detail.
Experience with advocacy or environmental groups a plus.
