Housing Counselor (Supportive Housing) – Tenderloin Housing Clinic – San Francisco, CA

Tenderloin Housing Clinic (THC) is seeking a dedicated Housing Counselor for our Housing Department!

ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Housing Counselor assists single low-income adults, the majority of whom are homeless or formerly homeless attain and maintain housing through the Modified Payment Program in accordance with Tenderloin Housing Clinic’s (THC) Mission, Core Values, and Customer Service Philosophy.

Duties* Include:
– Verify eligibility for program(s) and enroll clients/tenants in appropriate program(s)
– Process new client/tenant intakes and client/tenant withdrawals; provide information and assistance to potential THC clients/tenants
– Safeguard agency and client/tenant monies and be accountable for check security policies
– Receive and record rent payments
– Disburse checks and rent receipts
– Prepare Payment Plans and Housing Retention Plans for clients/tenants who are behind in rent
– Collaborate regularly with inter-departmental THC staff to ensure effective client/tenant services and to increase housing retention and client/tenant stability
– Work regularly with non-Master Lease hotel staff and various community agencies
– Advocate for clients/tenants with outside agencies and landlords with regard to rental issues and general client/tenant-related matters
– Collaborate with non-THC Case Managers and service providers to ensure coordinated service delivery
– Provide warm referrals to other programs for financial assistance, counseling, or other services
– Schedule and attend rent roll meetings, as assigned, with non-Master Lease buildings to verify client/tenant information and rent balances
– Help to mediate landlord-tenant disputes

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
– Minimum of 2 years of college course work
– Minimum of 2 years’ experience working directly with diverse, low-income individuals
– Ability to direct clients to appropriate resources
– Understanding of rent pro-ration and terms of tenancy
– Working knowledge of PC/Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
– Ability to work within databases, create routine reports and write correspondence
– Ability to read and effectively interpret manuals, policies, and instructions
– Highly effective customer service skills
– Knowledge of relevant San Francisco resources
– Experience working in non-profit or public sector
