Grants Manager – SF Marin Food Bank – San Francisco, CA

The SF-Marin Food Bank’s mission is to end hunger in San Francisco and Marin. This year, we expect to distribute 48 million pounds of food to more than 144,000 individuals each week through a network of over 450 food programs, including neighborhood food pantries, after-school programs, AIDS service providers, domestic violence and homeless shelters, health clinics, job training programs, senior lunch programs, soup kitchens, and street outreach programs.

PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Grants Manager reports to the Associate Director, Leadership Gifts and focuses on developing and implementing grant-writing strategies that support the short- and long-term fundraising goals of the SF-Marin Food Bank. The position supervises the Institutional Giving Associate.

The Grants Manager manages the grants process from start to finish with current and prospective grant makers. This management process includes but is not limited to researching prospective funders; collecting, managing and synthesizing grant-related information; writing inquiries, proposals, and reports; and maintaining all foundation records. She or he oversees various grants systems to ensure that the grants fundraising and stewardship is properly tracked and recorded.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Research

Identifies new prospects by researching potential foundation and corporate grantmakers and monitors various sources to identify potential grant opportunities.
Manages and oversees a portfolio of prospective grantmakers.
Analyzes and recommends funding opportunities to pursue from pool of prospective grantmakers.

Grants’ Systems & Administration

Maintains the monthly grants calendar.
Strategically coordinates and prioritizes work assignments to support the grants workplan.
Oversees the Institutional Giving Associate’s workload and delegates grant writing and administration projects to the Institutional Giving Associate as appropriate.
Develops, implements, and innovates systems to carry out, organize, and monitor grants fundraising efforts.
Tracks ongoing changes to organizational data from various departments within the organization and works with Data and Donor Services and the Institutional Giving Associate to ensure the timely updating of internal development database and corresponding documents.
Oversees the processing of all incoming grants and their paperwork and scheduling of all appropriate corresponding actions in Raiser’s Edge
Proofreads outgoing letters, proposals, reports and other grant documents.
Produces grant tracking reports from database for monthly and annual tracking, strategic planning, and budget management purposes.
Ensures that all data on funders is up to date in hard files, electronic files and Raiser’s Edge.

Grant Writing & Stewardship

Works with the Associate Director, Leadership Gifts to set strategy for prospective and current grantmakers.
Builds and stewards sustainable relationships with foundation, corporate, and government funders. Develops contact with and facilitates meetings between grantmakers and SF-Marin Food Bank leadership as needed.
Develops language, goals and other materials for new programs and/or capital priorities and needs identified by Associate Director, Leadership Gifts and the Chief Development Officer.
Plans and coordinates grant development including research, data collection, writing, budget, and supporting materials. Writes letters of intent, follow up letters, and other grant-related documents as needed.
Writes grant proposals to solicit, retain, and maximize financial support according to grantmakers’ guidelines and deadlines.
Tracks the status of funded projects and coordinates reports to funders. Works with Programs, Operations, and Finance & Administration staff as needed to collect program outcome data and evaluate performance. Writes and submits reports according to grantmakers’ guidelines and deadlines.

Other Funding Projects

Assists development staff with selected fundraising activities to achieve department and organization goals, which include but are not limited to, donor recognition/cultivation events and corporate partner/sponsor projects.
Produces other written collateral to support broader development goals as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree.
Excellent professional writing and editing skills.
3-5 years of grant writing experience in the non-profit sector, preferably for a human services organization.
Staff supervision experience.
Proven research, planning, conceptual, and strategic-thinking skills.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities and meet deadlines.
Must be able to work successfully in a collaborative team-oriented style.
Must be extremely organized and detailed oriented.
Experience in data management is a plus.
Familiarity with both private and public funding sources.
Ability to work independently, as well as cooperatively, with individuals (staff and volunteers) from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds in a culturally diverse environment.
Proficiency with Word, Excel, and web-based research; experience with Raiser’s Edge strongly preferred.
