Maestra Joana Carneiro and Berkeley Symphony are one of the most daring and creative forces in the orchestral world today. Recipient of numerous awards for cutting-edge programming, the Symphony has been called “the Bay Area’s most adventurous orchestra,” (Contra Costa Times) presenting “the most fascinating, innovative and probing concerts in the Bay Area” (Oakland Tribune). Berkeley Symphony is a regional orchestra employing 75+ musicians who perform four subscription programs, new music reading sessions, and extensive music education activities in the public schools each year.

The Position

Berkeley Symphony seeks an energetic, organized, and personable Interim Director of Development. Working closely with the Executive Director, members of the Board of Directors, and the part-time Development and Marketing Associate, the Interim Development Director will help oversee the full range of the Symphony’s fundraising activities, including fundraising events, institutional fundraising, and direct mail campaigns. The ideal candidate will be an experienced arts manager or development professional with proven ability to manage complex projects and work collaboratively with a diverse group of people. This is a two-month appointment (April-May 2016).

Primary responsibilities

Help plan and manage the Symphony’s spring Benefit Gala (April 29, 2016). With contracted Event Planner and others, oversee event logistics. Manage event staffing by Berkeley Symphony staff, Board members, and volunteers. Oversee and manage guest registration and check out. Help plan and execute various auction activities (including the live auction and silent auction) taking place at the event. With Development and Marketing Associate, process all event income and produce acknowledgment letters and related documents in a timely fashion. Oversee event budget and timely payment to vendors.

Working with contracted grant writer, oversee timely submission of grant proposals and reports to foundation, government, and corporate funders.

With Development and Marketing Associate, produce and send out fundraising appeal letters, and work with Patron Services Manager to plan and execute online fundraising activities. With Development and Marketing Associate, ensure that all donations are tracked accurately in internal database and that acknowledgment letters are produced and sent out in a timely manner.

Help plan and manage donor cultivation and recognition events, including events associated with the May 5, 2016 subscription concert at Zellerbach Hall.

Produce financial reports as needed, including monthly contributed revenue reports and other donation reports for the full Board or various Board committees.

Qualifications

Excellent organization and multi-tasking skills and strong attention to detail
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
Substantive experience in arts or nonprofit management desired
Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google applications (required); experience with Theatre Manager or similar database (desired)
Provide own transportation and be able to transport materials and supplies for events (desired)
