Who We Are:
Healthy Democracy is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization based in Portland Oregon. Our mission is to elevate the voice of citizens in our democracy in order to give voters information they can trust. Our signature program, the Citizens’ Initiative Review (CIR), brings representative groups of citizens together to fairly and thoroughly evaluate high-profile ballot initiatives for the benefit of all voters. It’s a new and highly effective approach to democratic reform.
Healthy Democracy is nationally recognized for our achievement in institutionalizing the Citizens’ Initiative Review as part of elections in Oregon, and we’re now expanding this successful program to additional states. The CIR is a significant innovation in the fields of deliberative democracy and civic engagement, recently recognized as International Project of the Year by the International Association for Public Participation. In 2014, we began expanding the role of the Citizens’ Initiative Review by piloting the program in Colorado and Arizona. With national and state-based support from foundations and civic leaders, in 2015 we are growing the organization to further expand the CIR program into new states in 2016 and beyond.
Job Description:
The Development Manager will join our small staff of four permanent employees. The Development Manager will work closely with the Healthy Democracy staff and Board of Directors’ fundraising team to coordinate HD’s membership and individual fund development and outreach strategies. In addition, the Development Manager will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the organization, including helping to implement and communicate about the Citizens’ Initiative Review.
Key responsibilities include:
1) Individual Membership / Fund Development: Manage the organization’s individual fund development process
2) Database & Social Media Outreach: Manage the organization’s database and online resources, and coordinate social media and website strategies
3) Outreach & Program Support: Provide coordination support for outreach events, support organizational communication and logistical needs
Individual Membership / Fund Development:
Provide direct support to the executive staff and Board of Directors in coordinating all facets of the organization’s individual donor cultivation strategies.
Manage production of all fundraising and outreach related materials (online and print); work with vendors and consultants.
Manage direct mail and individual donor engagement strategies and events.
Database & Social Media Management:
Data management of donor profiles, tracking and follow-ups; conduct research to identify new contacts.
Manage social media and website updates.
Manage social media outreach strategies in coordination with partners.
Outreach & Program Support:
Outreach and Event Logistics: Provide logistical and administrative support to executive and program staff in setting up and coordinating outreach events and meetings; coordinate conference events and special events.
Correspondence: Phone reception and message relay to appropriate HD staff, responding to general email inquiries, checking/distributing HD mail.
Program Support: Provide direct logistical and administrative support to program activities.
Other Duties: Support program event activities, out-of-state outreach activities, and online training events as needed, other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
We are looking for someone with a passion for civic engagement and improving our democratic process to join a small team of dedicated professionals based in Portland, Oregon. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated successful non-profit or campaign development experience, proficiency in social media outreach, and be skilled in event management and data management.
Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in a related field and either 2+ years relevant work experience or equivalent certification in non-profit administration and development. Candidates should be highly detail oriented, be able to work with a diversity of stakeholders, and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills. Travel will be also required.
Exceptional candidates will also possess a strong knowledge of donor engagement strategies, will have demonstrated a track-record for political and social advocacy, and have shown the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
Compensation: Starting salary of$40,000 – $48,000 annually DOE. Full-time exempt. Generous PTO, paid holidays, and health coverage benefit. Advancement opportunities.
