Organization Description

For over 40 years, the Jamestown Community Center has been providing learning opportunities and safe space for low-income Mission District youth. Jamestown’s mission is to mobilize the resources of families, neighborhood residents, and other community members to help young people realize their full potential as empowered and productive members of society. Jamestown fulfills this mission by annually providing 1500 youth, ages 4 to 18, with a full range of educational enrichment, academic tutoring, family literacy, leadership training, employment, sports, and teen guidance programs. Throughout these programs, Jamestown aims to provide all participants with the highest-quality youth development experience. This approach builds young people’s resiliency as they face their daily challenges and supports their natural inclination to pursue their own growth into healthy, productive young adults.

Position Description

The Deputy Director provides strategic direction and management to the Jamestown Community Center. He or she supports the mission of the organization by providing strategic direction, guiding program development activities and implementing appropriate evaluation systems and processes. As a part of Jamestown’s leadership team, he or she will support and guide the work of other leadership team members in the development and design of programs to reflect the goals in the organization’s strategic plan. The Deputy Director will also work closely with the Director of Development and the Executive Director to provide strategic direction in evaluating and responding to program funding opportunities. The ideal candidate will possess strong evaluation and program development skills and experience, cultural competence working in a low income community, tact, humor, and outstanding communication skills in English and Spanish and with economically diverse audiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Works with Executive Director to ensure that the organization adheres to its strategic plan and makes consistent and timely progress.
Promotes active and broad participation by staff and volunteers in the organization’s work.
Provides direction and leadership to ensure the achievement of the organization’s mission, strategy, and its annual goals and objectives.
Acts as a spokesperson and represents the organization in relevant venues to enhance the organization’s profile.
Represents the programs and point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public.
Builds and strengthens the data and evaluation systems of the Jamestown Community Center’s programs.
Supports and guides the work of agency Directors by supervising program design and evaluating progress towards goals.
Supports programs by using data to improve programs and respond to youth needs.
Develop, implement and monitor an evaluation plan addressing logic models, strategic and program evaluation questions, data collection methods, analysis and reporting.
Develops data collection policies and practices.
Supports the work of other Directors by assisting in program development activities, and the implementation of strategies in response to evaluation results.
Conduct research on funding requirements for data collection and reporting, and puts into place local methods to ensure reliable, accurate compliance.
Represent Jamestown in activities and projects, including meetings with stakeholders, funders, community members, and Jamestown’s Board of Directors.
Manage and supervise staff, interns and volunteers.
Serve as part of the organization’s leadership team, and contribute to the development and execution of strategic decisions.
Complies with Jamestown policies and procedures, and laws pertaining to the operation of Jamestown.
Ensures that program staff understands and comply with Jamestown policies and procedures.
Maintains professional attitude and work ethic.

Qualifications

A passion for Jamestown’s mission and commitment to providing young people with the highest-quality youth development experience.
Experience working with multi-ethnic, multi-racial young people.
Excellent communication, organizational, and administrative skills.
Flexible, able to take initiative and comfortable working with diverse stakeholders.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other staff.
Experience with youth program development, teaching and/or tutoring strongly preferred.
Understanding of the Common Core ELA and Math Standards strongly preferred.
Experience with Positive Youth Development methodology and practice.
Knowledge and experience of program evaluation principles, theories, concepts and practices
Ability to analyze information, summarize findings, and present them in ways easily understandable to decision makers.
Demonstrated ability in designing and manipulating data using a computer database.
Experience supporting and training staff and community partners that are unfamiliar with research and evaluations to collect, manage and analyze data.
Master’s Degree in Education, Human Development or related field required, and teaching credential strongly preferred.
At least 5 years of experience with program development and evaluation required.
Proficiency in Spanish required.
