Organization Overview

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate. The Community Outreach Group is a part of Planned Parenthood, but a separate organization that supports Planned Parenthood with short-term staffing and large-scale advocacy campaigns.

Program Overview

In 2015, numerous attacks have been made on women’s access to healthcare in states across the country. Planned Parenthood is partnering with the Community Outreach Group to staff multiple Temporary Senior Organizers to help protect access to reproductive care in key states.

General Description

The Community Outreach Group is seeking highly motivated candidates to serve as Senior Organizers to work in close coordination with Planned Parenthood’s national field team and Planned Parenthood Affiliates, and deploy to target states to help seize key moments, organize supporters, mobilize for key fights and build power for Planned Parenthood and the reproductive health movement. Each Senior Organizer will be assigned to a local Planned Parenthood affiliate, and will work with Planned Parenthood’s existing infrastructure to execute campaign and capacity-building plans. Senior Organizers will deploy to a single state for a several-month assignment, and be responsible for driving assigned work in that placement.

Senior Organizers report to a Program Director or Deputy Program Director at the Community Outreach Group, and be assigned to a Planned Parenthood Regional Field Director or Affiliate Manager to coordinate their day-to-day work. While every assignment will be different, campaign elements might include direct voter, supporter, or constituent contact, story collection, volunteer engagement, building coalitions, and planning or managing events like press conferences or rallies.

Each placement will be different, but work may include:

Working with Planned Parenthood Regional Field Director, Community Outreach Group Program Director/Deputy Director, and affiliates to craft and hone campaign plans.
Recruiting, training, and managing volunteers who will participate in phone banking, door-to-door canvassing, story collection, and community events such as house parties, town hall meetings, press conferences, or rallies.
Engaging in direct constituent contact through canvasses, phone banks and other campaign events.
Executing a region-wide outreach program.
Training and mentoring current local organizers on new tactics or approaches.
Debriefing each assignment to capture key learnings, build case studies, and create training content.
Amplifying campaigns through earned or digital media.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills, experience meeting deadlines, and the ability to manage many tasks simultaneously and independently.
Knowledge of and commitment to progressive causes
Effective communicator face-to-face and in writing
Familiar with movement building, grassroots organizing, volunteer management, and using data to set goals and measure progress
Prior organizing experience
A basic understanding of campaign strategy (demonstrated by the ability to articulate the goals, strategy, activities, and results of a campaign you worked on as an employee, intern or volunteer)
Familiarity with core tactics of organizing, including: volunteer recruitment, volunteer management, staging canvasses, phone banking, one-on-one meetings, and organizational meetings
Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
Licensed driver with access to a vehicle

Has strong ties in the city in which you are applying to work
Brings some knowledge of or experience in reproductive health issues
Has lead trainings or facilitated workshops
Has worked with or built coalitions
Knows how to use the VAN voter database software (strongly preferred)
Knows how to use Excel
Knows how to use Google email, documents, etc.

Compensation

Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt, mid-level position with the Community Outreach Group, with a monthly base salary between $4,000 – $5000 depending on skills, experience, and qualifications. Full-time exempt employees are also eligible for a cell phone reimbursement up to $75/month, and employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance.

Senior Organizers who are assigned to a placement more than 50 miles from their home will be eligible for supporter housing, or in place of supporter housing, a reimbursement to offset the cost of short-term housing. Senior Organizers will also be eligible for travel reimbursements to get to the assigned placement location.

This is a short-term position with an expected end date of 11/22/15.
