Legacy International Intern – Legacy International / Global Youth Village – Washington, DC

Founded in 1979, Legacy International is a US-based non-governmental organization with a distinguished history strengthening civil society, building capacity and leadership, and promoting cooperation around the world. During the past 35+ years, Legacy has completed over 200 projects with more than 7,500 leaders, youths, and professionals from 110 countries.

Applicants with specific interest and experience in international relations, political science, marketing, communications, web strategies or user interface are preferred.

Overview

Legacy International is seeking energetic, talented university students or recent graduates with a passion for civic engagement and international understanding to join Legacy’s team. A successful candidate will be a creative self-starter, who will work closely a member of our dedicated year round staff either in Bedford, Virginia or the Washington, DC area.

Responsibilities:

Interns are valued team members, supporting Legacy’s mission of investing in emerging leaders who become effective catalysts for change in their communities. They contribute and learn about Legacy’s capacity building efforts and leadership development initiatives for adults and youths, while supporting social media strategy and office operations on a range of tasks including, but not limited to:

Conduct research and prepare reports or write posts for Legacy’s web site or blog
Assist with grant administration tasks
Perform project-specific outreach to partner organizations
Assist with special event planning and organization
Contribute and help maintain/enhance social media and networking presence
Assist in creatting content of vlaue for web site, FaceBook, etc.
Perform project-specific marketing and communications outreach
Help with creating online photo gallery, video gallery and tag for image search needs
Support team administrative needs, when needed (including data entry, filing, mass mailings, schedule coordination and preparing meeting or debriefing notes)

Dates/Time Commitment

Preferred dates – Feb 8 – Aug 31. Dates negotiable. Minimum length – 3 months. Candidates seeking a long expereince also considered.
Part time to full time, 20-40 hours per week. Flexible schedule.
Full time option in the summer months

Qualifications

Based within commuting distance of Legacy’s Bedford, VA office or currently resides in Washington, DC metro area.
Current undergraduate or graduate university student, or recent graduate
Ability to commit minimum of 15 hours per week (flexible structure) (Ability to work additional hours, including evening and weekends, during limited program delivery periods is preferred, but not required. Having this extra availability often enhances the scope and quality of one’s internship experience, allowing for the intern to attend various events & trainings.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills is a must, as successful candidate will work both internally with Legacy colleagues and externally with others from diverse populations and communities.
Self-starter with a positive attitude. Interest in and ability to work in both a team environment and alone with minimal direction.
Demonstrated personal computer skills, including basic troubleshooting and use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and the willingness to learn other software tools.
Demonstrated use and comfort navigating Web 2.0 sites and tools, including blogs, social networks, video and photo sharing, etc.
Interest in building capacity in under-served communities and championing individuals, nonprofits and social enterprises that connect people, increase giving and catalyze civic action.
Minimum age, 20 years old.

Terms

A modest salary is provided. Legacy will gladly work with an intern’s college or university to support the intern in earning academic credit for his/her work with Legacy.
