POSITION OVERVIEW

NMIC’s Immigration Attorney works with our highly skilled and experienced, interdisciplinary legal team. Provide legal assistance to NMIC clients and clients referred to NMIC for issues related to immigration. Assist in managing the work of a team of immigration paralegals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other related duties may be assigned according to need)

Conducts intake and assess appropriate cases to determine eligibility for legal assistance in immigration matters.
Provide legal representation and advocacy to primarily Spanish speaking communities in their immigration matters while working collaboratively with other NMIC programs to offer comprehensive client services.
Provide direct representation to assigned clients before USCIS in all applications for relief.
Compile and analyze programmatic statistical information for program reports.
Provide paralegals with guidance and assistance on immigration matters.
Coordinate in-house immigration trainings for staff.
Meet monthly with the Senior Immigration Attorney and the immigration team.
Contribute and steer outreach and education programs.
Participate in coalitions, activities, and community wide events.
Complete additional tasks as assigned by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

J.D. Law Degree/LL.B. with admission to the New York State Bar or willingness to take exam.
At least 1-3 years relative immigration experience preferred.
Non-profit immigration work experience preferred.
Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
Ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and to interact with management and program staff.
