Director of Individual Philanthropy – Planned Parenthood Northern California – Concord, CA

PPNorCal is currently seeking a full-time Director of Individual Philanthropy. This position reports to the Vice President of Development and is an integral part of the Development department. The Director has responsibility for planning, implementing, managing and evaluating Planned Parenthood’s individual major gifts program inclusive of annual, capital, endowment and legacy gifts. The Director will manage a portfolio of individual donors and supervise the Individual Philanthropy/Major Gifts team. The Director will ensure that financial and other objectives are attained and ensure the appropriate and effective use of the organization’s resources and volunteers. This position is located at the Concord Administrative Office, but does offer a Telecommuting option two (2) days a week to candidates who live in San Rafael and San Francisco.

This is an exempt, full-time position, working 40 hours per week including evenings as needed. Salary is DOE.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

In partnership with the senior/development department staff and volunteer leadership, sets goals and objectives for the major gifts program to build and sustain a high level of individual support for PPNorCal by fully implementing an individual major gifts program.

Develops solicitation strategies that may include multiple philanthropic vehicles and prepares staff and volunteers for donor solicitation.

Cultivates and solicits major and capital gifts with a focus on individuals, including identifying and stewarding prospects and donors. Manage a personal portfolio of individual donors and prospects.

In partnership with the VP of Development, serves as lead staff for board Philanthropy Committee and supports committee chairs in setting committee direction, recruitment, orientation of new members, agendas, meeting materials, and follow-up.

Directly supervises 3-5 employees in the Development department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Cultivates relationships with governing board, board of advocates and other “friend groups” to effectively involve them in prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

Supervises Individual Philanthropy Officer (IPO/major gifts officer/s) in the field to ensure implementation of plans, provides direction, coaching and support, and develops appropriate and effective strategies for donors and prospects.

Collaborates with program staff throughout PPNorCal regions to identify specific and appropriate opportunities to engage donors and fund core programs while ensuring sound communication with major gifts team.

Oversees development of annual work plans for own portfolio and the portfolios of the VP of Development, CEO, Sr. VP of External Affairs and IPO/major gifts officers.

Prepares and manages the budget for the major gifts team, monitors revenues and expenses, reports on variances, and updates projections as needed.

Ensures collaboration with foundation team and program staff to seek gifts for operations, planned gifts, foundation gifts and other giving opportunities consistent with the organization’s strategic plan.

Collaborates with other development staff on cultivation and stewardship activities, site visits, and special events.

Manages staff to prioritize and develop prospect research profiles and analytics to advance major gifts programs.

Designs and directs implementation of special funding initiatives and campaigns.

Identifies major donors for potential involvement in advisory groups or for possible board membership.

Prepares ongoing financial reports and activity updates for management, the Board of Directors, and volunteer committees.

Ensures that prospect and donor information is recorded accurately in Raisers’ Edge and collaborates with Operations team on systems, reports and other infrastructure needs.

Participates in departmental and interdepartmental workgroups as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or four to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Experience with customer relations management (CRM) databases or donor databases required. Raiser’s Edge experience strongly preferred.

Four to seven years of experience in fund development as a staff member.

Must have reliable automobile transportation and a valid California Driver’s License and insurance.

CFRE designation is helpful, but not required.

Superior writing and verbal communication skills; excellent public speaking skills.

Excellent proofreading skills.

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with accuracy, attention to detail and confidentiality.

Ability to manage projects and tasks independently with minimal supervision.

Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

Experience managing professional level staff is highly desirable.

Available to work occasional weekends and evenings.

Knowledge of Bay Area philanthropic communities desired.

Commitment to quality health care and excellent customer service.

Familiarity with planned giving programs.

Demonstrated success motivating and managing volunteers.

Able to work well in a team environment.
