Youth Development Specialist – Enterprise for High School Students – San Francisco, CA

Title: Youth Development Specialist

Position Objective: To mentor and support youth through job training and internship programs for two programs at EHSS, This Way Ahead and Pathways Career Ahead. To provide youth with a positive professional role model and inspire them to pursue success in their education and career.

This Way Ahead (TWA) is a year-long job readiness and career exploration training program for marginalized youth in San Francisco that includes an internship component at Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic stores.

Pathways Career Ahead is a 12-week career awareness and job readiness program that cycles three times per year, for 225-250 high-school aged youth each year.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This Way Ahead Outreach and Youth Recruitment (September – December)

Assist with in school and CBO program outreach and youth recruitment including development of marketing materials, mailings, emails, school and CBO site visits.
Participate in youth participant selection process: conduct information sessions, review applications, interview applicants and recommend participants for final selection.

This Way Ahead Job Readiness Phase (January – April)

Primary job counselor for up to 2 cohorts of youth (25 each) during the Job Readiness Training including workshop facilitation, individual check-ins, practice interviews, employment portfolio reviews and individual support as needed.
Responsible for supporting at-risk youth in navigating external resources.
Back-up for the 2-3 other Job Readiness Training cohorts
Train, support and provide youth development and workshop facilitation guidance and feedback to Gap Inc. volunteers who facilitate supplemental workshops for the participants.
Assist in planning and execution of large program events such as graduation ceremonies.
College and Career programming support as needed.

Pathways Career Ahead Summer Cycle/EHSS Internship Phase (June – September)

Primary job counselor for up to 2 cohorts of youth (25 each) for summer cycle.
Responsible for workshop facilitation of job readiness, skill-building, and college/career exploration workshops.
Complete individual counseling meetings to assist and supervise students with their employment search including job readiness counseling, preparing for interviews, writing resumes, filling out applications and assisting with other related employment issues.
Assist with conducting the Job Readiness Assessment.
Support youth in their efforts for non-EHSS summer employment opportunities.
Primary staff-person for drop-in students.
Assist This Way Ahead youth both who receive internships with Enterprise for High School Students as well as who do not in providing follow-up to program support including internship support, job search assistance, interview preparation, résumé writing, job application completion, assisting with other employment issues and career and college planning.
College and Career programming support as needed.

Ongoing Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with Gap Foundation and Gap/Old Navy/Banana Republic Store Managers to develop successful program structure and support for the youth.
Participate in curriculum development for job readiness and college/career exploration workshops.
Participate in program evaluation process and provide recommendations for program improvement.
Participate in agency wide meetings and events, special projects and other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum BA required, preferably in a field related to child development or social work, and minimum two years in a professional work environment, preferably in the youth development and/or youth employment fields, facilitating workshops and meeting individually with youth.
Knowledge of youth development principles and at least one year of experience working with youth in a group and individual basis; experience working with diverse populations.
Ability to work across two programs (with different curriculum and reporting to different managers).
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Creative, detailed oriented, and possess ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects. Experience developing curriculum for workshops.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Salesforce, Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator, Constant Contact and Google Docs preferred.
Ability to work 10:30am–6:30pm and occasional weekends from September–May. Hours from June–August are 9am–5pm.
Knowledge of a language other than English (particularly Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese) is a plus.
