Housekeeping Manager – Esalen Institute – Big Sur, CA

Esalen Institute, the pioneering alternative education center dedicated to personal and social transformation, is currently seeking a Housekeeping Supervisor, motivated by high quality Guest service, dedicated to personal growth and a Community life style.
Reporting to the Housekeepng Manager, this full-time position (40 hrs/week) is responsible for leading our housekeeping staff to efficiently complete all housekeeping and laundry daily duties, and to ensure a high level of room cleanliness and presentation, supporting our Guest experience.

Responsibilities

Support the Housekeeping Manager in leading a Service focus Department, supervising and supporting our staff. Particularly holding our Workscholars and Extended Students.
Oversee the completion of daily operational procedures and duties and workshop requests
Safety – Support a safe working environment for our staff, training and staff guidance to ensure safe actions and use of the body. Ensures all OSHA and safety requirements are met or exceeded and provide safety instruction as needed.
Monitor the business flow to develop efficient practices and procedures, Offering improvement ideas, and leading special projects
Support Inventory management, product ordering and vendor relationships, working with the Manager, ordering all products and supplies, ensuring right investment within budget
Ensures adequate supplies are available for the completion of daily requirements
Sustainability focus – support sustainable and earth friendly product usage and discard
Interdepartmental relations & liaison – working closely with Maintenance, the Office, Facilities, Healing Arts & Programs, co-creation in support of Esalen and our Guest experience
General cleaning duties, Baths deep cleaning, general housekeeping functions
Attend all Housekeeping Business Meetings and Process
Flexible to work weekends and holidays

Quality Control – Accommodations & Meetings Room – Improve room cleanliness and quality, enhance procedures with controlled and regular activities for higher quality
Training – Support the delivery of high quality training for Workscholars & ES’s. Creating good documentation of tasks, including the training program

40 hours of physical labor, involving lifting, bending carrying linen stock, loading and unloading laundry van, carrying massage tables, loading and unloading industrial washing equipment.

Experience/Qualifications/Skills

Leading teams for at least 2 years
Previous housekeeping experience is required in a multi-roomed organization
Ability to make effective decisions, take responsibility and accountability. Deal compassionately with difficult situations and people, being able to set healthy and assertive boundaries in kindness and with respect
Detailed orientated and highly organized, with good problem solving skills and the ability to navigate a complex environment
Documentation writing and experience with training others
Strong computer skills with an eye for detail accuracy
Self motivated and responsible, with a willingness to learn a wide variety of job skills
Be able to receive guidance and feedback, and be able to provide feedback with care and respect
A strong desire to participate in our Esalen Community

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job: the employee must be able to work in a physically demanding environment; maneuver on uneven ground; stand for long periods of time; regularly lift and carry bags and bundles up to 30 pounds; carry, push and pull vacuums; lift, bend, carry, load and unload laundry in and out of industrial washing equipment; move furniture. There is daily exposure to biodegradable chemicals.
