Director of Instruction – Citizens of the World Charter Schools – Brooklyn, NY

The mission of Citizens of the World Charter Schools New York (CWC NY) is to provide a socioeconomically, culturally and racially diverse community of students with an intellectually challenging, experiential learning environment that develops each student’s confidence, potential, and individual responsibility as a citizen of the world. We are in our second year of operation, having opened one school in Williamsburg (CSD 14) and one school in Crown Heights (CSD 17). Next year our schools will serve students in grades K-3.

Overview

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction is an instructional leader who will support the creation and development of an engaging, joyful, academically rigorous school built on our philosophical foundations of Understanding, Connection and Diversity.

The Director will support the Principal to help refine and innovate on the model. Through his/her work s/he will demonstrate a commitment to challenging and motivating our diverse students, coaching and pushing our teachers to achieve academic excellence, develop as progressive educators, and positively impact the school community.

Responsibilities

Academics and Instruction

Provides coaching and support to improve school-based instructional teaching practices by providing teacher observation, coaching, feedback, and accountability with a goal that ensures that all students are learning and that there are no gaps in student achievement among subgroups.
Develops targeted professional development for teachers that is aligned with the academic model, tenets of social emotional learning (SEL) and creation of student-centered classrooms; aids in the implementation of this professional development alongside the Principal.
Ensures the use of the CWC assessment suite and other school-selected assessments that, together, reflect the educational philosophy of CWC Schools and also prepares students to excel on standardized measures.
Uses multiple sources of data to inform the Principal’s plans for the ongoing improvement of student achievement including but not limited to academic interventions, differentiated instruction and identification of overall growth areas for classroom instruction.
Supports the Principal to ensure school-based curriculum selection and instructional methodologies are aligned to Common Core standards.
Supports the Principal by coaching teachers with intentional, engaging, rigorous and joyful practices.
Collaborates with the Special Education Coordinator, English as a Second Language Coordinator and other instructional leads to ensure that all students are engaged in rigorous, thoughtful instruction.

Data Collection and Reporting

Works with the Principal to interpret and use assessment data to drive instruction and student achievement, and develops school-wide systems to make data use predictable and on-going.
Provides school-level interim reports and updates on academic outcomes of the school.
Coaches teachers on how to effectively analyze and use academic data to drive instruction.

As a member of the CWC Williamsburg Leadership Team, the director shall contribute to the development of the CWC adult culture through leading by example, demonstrating the highest-levels of professionalism, aligned with the CWC Core Values, Operating Norms and Core Purpose. In addition, s/he:

Ensures that all members of the school community are engaged and valued.
Communicates the school’s vision and goals in a way that ensures understanding and commitment from a racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse community of parents, students, faculty, staff, and board members.
Oversees the development and implementation of varied forms of communication with families.

Serves as an active leader in the charter community—learning from others and sharing CWC School’s best practices.

Community

Establishes and maintains strong relationships with the Principal, teachers, parents, community members, and the staff.

Ensures that all members of the school community are engaged and valued.
Communicates the organization’s vision and goals in a way that ensures understanding and commitment from a racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse community of parents, students, faculty, staff, and board members.

Reporting Relationships

The Director shall report to the Principal.

Qualifications

Candidates must have:

A significant record of elevating student achievement in diverse, academically, high-achieving classrooms, with a strong understanding of pedagogy that drives results.
Master’s degree in education.
Experience working in a mixed socio-economic school (SES) strongly preferred.
Experience managing and leading high-performing teams as a school, building, or network leader in an educational setting.
Experience coaching, developing and evaluating teachers; experience creating and executing strong professional development sessions strongly preferred.
