College Study Skills Instructor – NJ LEEP (Law and Education Empowerment Project) – Newark, NJ

Organization Overview

NJ LEEP’s mission is to empower urban youth from underserved neighborhoods in urban New Jersey to perform at high academic levels by building skills through law-related, mathematic, and other educational programs, developing the habits necessary for lasting success and community leadership, and offering exposure to role models who have achieved academic and professional success. NJ LEEP programming simultaneously works with students and their family members, as well as alumni, in order to empower and uplift urban communities to disrupt systemic cycles of poverty.

Position Details

NJ LEEP is seeking a Summer College Study Skills Instructor to teach a curriculum titled “Study Skills for College Success” to urban high school students entering their senior year. The curriculum uses college level philosophy readings as application exercises for the skills instruction. The program runs for six weeks and requires a commitment of 35 hours per week for 6 weeks from June 22nd to July 31st. Training will begin the last week of June.

Skills & Qualifications Sought

BS/BA degree from a 4-year college or university;

Experience working with rigorous college preparation programs (preferred);

Strong background in all areas of writing (grammar, essay composition and organization, syntax);

Experience with instruction in leading structured class sessions and discussions with college-level reading materials;

Demonstrated ability to provide detailed, effective editing and feedback to students regarding written assignments;

Interest in Urban Education and/or Classroom Instruction;

Ability to motivate students and embody a philosophy of high expectations and “no-excuses” approach to student engagement;
