AmeriCorps Teaching Fellowship – Life Together – Lawrence, MA

Life Together is a ten-month fellowship and leadership development project that matches young leaders (21-32 years of age) with mission-based non-profit organizations, churches, and schools throughout Eastern Massachusetts. Life Together is a strategic initiative of The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and an affiliate program of the Episcopal Service Corps.

Esperanza Academy, located in Lawrence, MA, is a tuition-free, independent school in the Episcopal tradition for low income girls in grades 5-8. Esperanza Academy is 100% privately funded.

The Social Justice Teaching Fellowship is a partnership between Life Together and Esperanza. During their two-year commitment with Life Together, fellows work for social justice, grow as leaders, and live in community with other fellows. In addition to teaching, fellows participate in regular leadership training and spiritual reflection.

Fellows will serve from July 1, 2015 through June 21, 2017. Initial contract will be for the first year, with most fellows being invited and expected to return for a second year.

About the position

The Fellow will teach classes, coach in the athletic program, serve as an advisor to students, and perform other responsibilities related to teaching. The successful candidate will demonstrate belief in the mission and philosophy of both Life Together and Esperanza Academy. The teaching fellow will be a person of high moral character with a generous sense of humor, determination and fortitude. The teaching fellow shall have the ability to work independently and cooperatively and be committed to goal-oriented leadership. Organizational, computer, written, and oral communication skills must be exemplary.

A bachelor’s degree is required
Teaching experience and work with urban youth is preferred, but not required.
Prior leadership experience is preferred

Compensation:

Fellows receive housing, health insurance, a modest living stipend, and are eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award (to pay student loans or put toward future graduate school tuition). Fellows also receive extensive leadership training.
