StreetSquash aims to help each child realize his or her academic and personal potential through long-term, rigorous programming in academic tutoring, squash instruction, college prep, literacy enrichment, community service, and one-on-one mentoring. Serving 180 Harlem public school students in grades 6-12, StreetSquash boasts a 100% high school graduation and college matriculation rate as well as a college completion rate of over 80%. The Enrichment Program is held every Friday and Saturday for 75-minute sessions and emphasizes innovative thinking and project based learning. This program is in supplement to weekly Academic Sessions and is designed to prepare students for the rigors of middle and high school by allowing for more hands on learning and reinforcement of necessary skills (STEM, ELA, Social-Emotional, Health and Wellness, and Service Learning). Enrichment sessions are lead by Academic Directors/Coordinators and Academic Instructors with the support of Academics Coaches and volunteers.

StreetSquash is seeking a driven, innovative Academic Instructor with a passion for supporting young people and putting them on the path to achieving their higher education goals. Training and preparation for this position will begin September 8th with the first day of Enrichment beginning September 18th. The Academic Instructor can work either Friday, Saturday or both days and will report to the Senior Academic Director.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Developing curriculum (including handouts, presentations, etc) for Enrichment sessions focused specifically on skills in STEM and ELA for middle school students
Facilitating developed Enrichment lessons in an engaging way
StreetSquash may provide some lesson plans and Academic Instructors are expected to deliver all information outlined in the lesson plans provided.
Setting up for Enrichment sessions: gathering materials and snacks, organizing classroom space, etc.
Managing volunteers and Academic Coaches assigned to Enrichment session
Managing student behavior to ensure productive Enrichment sessions
Helping monitor students during transitions, arrival and dismissal
Meeting regularly with supervisor to review lessons, discuss student progress, etc.
Attending monthly/bimonthly Academic Staff meetings and Professional Developments where appropriate.

Qualifications:

Must be available to work 2:30 – 6:15 pm on Fridays and/or 10:00 – 4:00 pm on Saturdays starting September 18th and be available for all trainings and meetings
Experience with lesson planning and curriculum development required
Excellent writing, teaching and facilitation skills
Has teachable knowledge of middle school STEM and ELA
Can skillfully read, interpret, and implement a written lesson plan
Has some experience supervising peers
Experience with behavior and classroom management preferred
Experience working with youth required
Available to work the full academic school year (September to mid-June)

Note:

Opportunities to develop skills in behavior management, group facilitation, organization, communication, cultural competence, etc. through on site trainings.
There is some flexibility in daily start and end time
Paid curriculum preparation hours can be completed at StreetSquash or on own time.
