Volunteer / Communications Coordinator – Forest Park Conservancy – Portland, OR

Work Schedule: 5 days, 40 hours/week (includes some weekends and evenings)

Forest Park Conservancy seeks a Volunteer and Communications Coordinator to support the Conservancy’s mission to protect and restore Forest Park for future generations.

THE ORGANIZATION

Forest Park Conservancy protects and fosters the ecological health of Forest Park, maintains and enhances the park’s extensive trails network, and inspires community appreciation and future stewardship as a gift for generations. Each year, we work with 1,000 volunteers to maintain trails, remove invasive species and plant native trees and shrubs. Forest Park Conservancy is leading a 20-year campaign to restore 15,000 acres of public and private lands to ensure the long-term health of Forest Park.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Volunteer and Communications Coordinator position is responsible for supervising, strengthening and expanding our volunteer program while spurring community engagement through communications strategies and volunteer stewardship opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteer Coordination | 75% Time

Lead volunteer work parties (at least one per week, usually more)
Manage volunteer data
Organize volunteer events
Report to and coordinate stewardship activities with Portland Parks & Recreation City Nature Program
Organize and lead Volunteer Crew Leader and other volunteer trainings to expand stewardship capacity
Develop and foster new relationships with community businesses, partners and organizations to support community integration for program development, community outreach and volunteer recruitment

Communications | 25% Time

Work with Development Director to plan communications activities
Coordinate with Development Director to promote Forest Park Conservancy via social media, draft and send monthly e-newsletter, send volunteer-related communications and edit print and online communications as needed
Develop promotional materials to recruit volunteers
Manage Discovery Hikes program, including recruiting and organizing hike leaders, producing promotional materials and following up with hike participants

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum 3 years’ experience in a program management role including project and budget management
Minimum 2 years’ related professional experience successfully coordinating and recruiting volunteers
Experience with developing and providing orientation and training
Outstanding oral, written, electronic and interpersonal communications skills
Valid driver’s license
Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, and Publisher)
Enjoy working outdoors with a wide range of people; sense of humor; flexible
Ability to work in a team and independently
Ability to lift 20lbs and work on rough and uneven terrain

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Utilize GPS and ArcGIS to track and report stewardship projects
Working knowledge of trail and restoration work
