Manager, PR / Media – United Way Worldwide – Alexandria, VA

As the Manager of PR & Media Relations you will execute public relations and media relations efforts for all of United Way Worldwide’s B2B and B2C audiences across nearly 1800 communities in more than 40 countries worldwide. You will report to the Director of PR & Media Relations and will develop and implement a broad range of communications, public relations, and media relations activities in support of UWW’s mission, vision, values and priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION:

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at an excellent level:

1. Assist in the development and implementation of a public relations strategy that increases brand awareness, clarifies brand experience and personalizes what United Way means to communities around the world through various events, engagements, interviews, op-eds and public facing opportunities.

2. Work with the Director of PR and Media Relations to create strategy for thought leadership and executive engagement. Provide input on communications plans and strategies and, with the Director, present plans to internal clients.

3. Field incoming media inquiries, manage media lists, the log of media inquiries and the relationship with PR Newswire.

4. Develop press materials, including news releases, materials and fact sheets on organizational programs and initiatives.

5. Coordinate with the Director of PR and Media Relations on seeking proactive media opportunities and op-ed placements.

6. Facilitate and staff media interviews with appropriate staff persons and prepare appropriate briefing materials.

7. Serve as an organizational spokesperson.

8. Manage the relationship with Meltwater and/or another media monitoring vendor and oversee the daily collection and curation of UW stories, so we can be on top of the news as it relates to UWW.

9. Coordinate with the Manager of Social Media to ensure consistency of proactive digital and press outreach.

10. Other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree.

Experience Required:
5 to 6 years of prior relevant work experience. Requires advanced writing and editing skills, demonstrated ability to write for multi-media. Foreign language competency as well as having lived or worked outside of the United States a plus. Strong knowledge of multiple data and content management systems is highly valued, as is strong knowledge of multiple social media channels and the ability to repurpose content across multiple communications platforms. Editorial and journalism experience are highly valued. Experience in creative collaboration as a member of a creative team is a plus. Additionally, this position requires strong relationship management and coaching skills and experience; ability to interact with all levels of staff. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent project management skills. Candidates need to be able to think about paid (or PSA), earned, shared and owned media. The Communications team managers will need the ability to repurpose content for various formats e.g. press release to blog post to newsletter… and pinch hit for each other. Communications team managers must be able to think, plan, do and innovate. Candidates will be required to provide communications credentials – samples of three best pieces of work.
