Organization Profile:

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted over 7.8 million children by constructing more than 1,700 schools, establishing over 16,000 libraries, publishing 882 new children’s book titles in 27 local languages, and reaching over 25,000 girls through our Girls’ Education program.

Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$44 million and our global staff numbers over 600. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have smaller fundraising offices in Delhi, New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. We have program offices in Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Pretoria, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane.

Position Overview:

The Global Programs Operations Associate’s (GPOA) role is to ensure that Room to Read has the tools, systems, and processes in place so staff across the organization are able to collect, report, and use our program data as easily, efficiently, and effectively as possible. Room to Read uses an online database built on[[http:Salesforce.com|Salesforce.com]] technology to store and track data related to our programs and donor reporting. The GPOA leads the implementation of database changes on behalf of the worldwide Programs and Operations teams, and identifies opportunities to improve our processes and systems. The GPOA’s role is to lead Programs’ database systems design and development, communicate changes, and lead efforts to build capacity and provide technical support to the worldwide Programs and Operations teams by keeping documentation and training materials accessible and up-to-date.

In addition, as a member of the Program Operations team, the GPOA will support efforts to create a more streamlined information and data management system across our ten Country Offices. They will support the review and analysis on how the organization is using information and data, create ways to streamline data collection, and lead the scoping of projects related to enhanced use of technology (in[[http:Salesforce.com|Salesforce.com]] (SFDC) or other platforms) to accomplish our work.

The Global Programs Operations Associate (GPOA) is a member of Room to Read’s Program Operations team, based at the Global Office in San Francisco, and reports directly to the Director, Global Program Operations. The role will coordinate closely with the IT team, in particular the[[http:Salesforce.Com|Salesforce.Com]] Manager (SFDC Manager).

Duties & Responsibilities:
Systems Management and Development:

Act as liaison between IT Team and the Programs and Operations Teams to provide business analyst input into design of database improvements and enhancements. Evaluate enhancement requests the database as they are submitted by collecting input from stakeholders throughout the organization, understanding and assessing the needs and impact, prioritizing projects, and representing those needs to the SFDC Manager to support design and implementation.
In collaboration with IT, lead the design and implementation of database enhancements and user experience improvements. Develops and tests enhancements in a sandbox environment and hand-off to the IT SFDC Manager to deploy to Production environment.
Perform Salesforce administration tasks for Programs database based on requests from Worldwide Programs and Operations Teams.
Create tools, systems, processes, and resources for the Operations and Programs Teams to use in order to monitor data quality and use data with greater efficiency and results.
Support data collection, data entry and data quality by maintaining Data Entry Dashboards & Reports for Country Office and Global Office audiences.
Work with the Research, Monitoring and Evaluation (RM&E) team to create reports and tools for calculating and tracking the cross-national indicators towards program objectives and other RM&E data as needed.
Advise on systems relating to data collection, entry, and reporting. Understand how the many related processes and systems work together and support the organization to be more streamlined.
Create database tools to help teams manage data entry and data quality for donor reports.
Assess data being collected by other tools to determine how current database or other technology solutions could support the monitoring and reporting needs of Country and Global Offices.
Serve as Operations point person for IT projects relevant to the department.

Capacity Building, Training, and Technical Support:

Develop and maintain centralized database training materials, documentation, reports, and dashboards as needed or requested by the Operations and Programs Teams. Content for documentation is often created by the Operations and Programs Teams and integrated into trainings and documentation by the GPOA.
Facilitate annual review of database-related documentation by the Operations Team to ensure each programs’ manuals are up to date and clearly written.
Serve as a liaison and resource to the organization, helping others understand the database and its capabilities. On an as-needed basis, as well as through brown bag and/or technical skills class around Global Solutions Database (GSD) reports & dashboards.
Serve as a liaison to help others to increase use of the data for program management and decision making.
Deliver program-specific database training for new Global Office Programs Team employees.

Communication:

Communicate with the worldwide Operations and Programs teams about database enhancements; help others who are less technical to understand the changes and train them to use the tools. For many, this is done virtually over email, phone, online trainings, etc. Support Programs team in their program-specific communications about GSD.
Track Room to Read’s target number of projects each country plans to implement annually and communicate them to the organization.

Qualifications:
Required:

Bachelor’s degree
A minimum of 3-5 years’ relevant professional experience
Prior work with relational and/or online database applications
Knowledge of the[[http:Salesforce.com|Salesforce.com]] (SFDC) platform
Technically adept: interested in technology and able to learn quickly
Great communicator: able to bridge communication between Programs, Operations and IT and to communicate with others at our country and regional offices
Excellent project management, data management, and report generation skills
Experience in successful development and implementation of business process improvements as relates to a database or data
Highly organized and thorough, with a strong detail orientation
Solution-oriented, creative problem solver
Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people
Proven track record of achieving results in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization
Legally eligible to work in the United States; no sponsorship provided
Ability and desire to travel internationally (up to 10%)

Preferred:

Salesforce.com Certified Admin
Experience bringing together data from different places to support better decision making
Advanced Excel skills
Prior success as member of a multi-national team
Prior experience building relationships and training others over a distance
