Job Title: Executive Director of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, the oldest human rights bar association in the United States. THIS POSITION IS OPEN AS OF JANUARY 15, 2016.

The National Lawyers Guild: has for 77 years been in the forefront of the struggle in this nation to make human rights more dominant in our legal system than property interests. It defended the unions in the late ’30’s and ’40’s and ’50s and does the same today. It was the nation’s first racially integrated bar association. It was the first bar association to organize the defense of civil rights workers in the south in the 1960’s; the first bar association to condemn the U.S. war in Vietnam and Iraq; and, the only bar association to defend those accused of violating the nation’s anti-Communist laws in the ’40’s and ’50’s.

There is not a progressive movement for social and political change that the Los Angeles Chapter of the Lawyers Guild has not defended in recent years, or is not defending today. Its membership is comprised of attorneys, law students, legal workers and jail house lawyers. And it has law school chapters in virtually all of the Los Angeles area law schools.

Duties of Executive Director: The Executive Director, who reports to an Executive Board elected by the general membership, which meets monthly, is responsible for the over-all operation, administration and supervision of programmatic work of the Chapter. Duties include, but are not limited to, preparing agenda’s for the board meetings; over-seeing fund raising including dues collection and the hosting of fund raising events such as the Chapter’s Annual Awards Banquet; keeping of the financial records of the organization; facilitating and supervising the chapter’s programmatic work, including its periodic Continuing Legal Education seminars, its public forums, its “know your rights” training for political groups, the work of its law school chapters, and its Legal Observer Program through which the chapter assists progressive political movements in securing permits to protest in the streets of Los Angeles, and providing Legal Observers who then attend the protests to document any police interference with the constitutional rights of the protesters.

Qualifications: Three years of experience as a community organizer or as an executive director on behalf of organizations seeking progressive/social/political/ legal change. Good computer skills. Good managerial skills. Good public speaking and writing skills. And most of all, an abiding commitment to the progressive goals of the National Lawyers Guild.
