Marketing / Communications Intern – Westside Transportation Alliance – Beaverton, OR

About the Westside Transportation Alliance

Transportation is an issue that affects us all as it cuts across generations, income levels, race, and geography. We all have places we need to get to whether it is to work, school, or places to recreate. Our job at Westside Transportation Alliance (WTA) is to make sure people have options in how they travel, with a particular emphasis on the commute trip.

The WTA is a 501(c)6 non-profit organization based in Washington County that works with member businesses, local jurisdictions, the County, transportation providers and other non-profit organizations to offer workplace services and programs that help employees commute to work by transit, carpool, walking and/or biking. Reducing the number of cars on our roads can relieve congestion, reduce air pollution and promote healthy behavior, all of which can improve quality of life.

The Mission of the WTA is to work directly with employers and employees to enhance economic opportunity, improve health, and foster a livable community via transportation options. WTA plays a role in shaping transportation policy in Washington County and is engaged with local and regional planning projects as a key resource for transportation demand management and multi-modal travel. The organization is managed by a paid Executive Director, and a volunteer Board of Directors.

Position Description

In the fall of 2014, WTA completed a rebranding process after working with a creative agency for nine months. Through this process, the organization looked critically at who we are, where we wanted to go, what our organization valued, and what messages we wanted to portray to different constituents. We unveiled a new, more contemporary logo that better reflected the organization today, and refreshed the look and feel of our website.

WTA now seeks a dynamic and self-motivated intern who can help elevate our brand awareness and better reach our target audiences through thoughtfully crafted messaging. This position will be responsible for regular activity on social media (including ongoing community management, content creation, and establishing and managing a presence on new platforms), developing relevant and engaging content for our website, designing marketing pieces for both print and online distribution, and creating WTA’s monthly e-newsletter. Through a variety of media outlets, WTA hopes to better communicate the benefits of investing in transportation options to employers, educate employees on transportation options and promote their use, share best practices with the communities we serve, and publicize the work we are conducting.

This position is ideal for a student seeking a degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related degree who is looking to gain experience in a non-profit setting. With only two full-time staff members, the intern will gain exposure to a broad view of non-profit operations and have creative liberty to develop and implement marketing strategies that may be new to the organization. This will be a part time position, schedule can be flexible, from July through December 2015, with a possibility of extending into 2016.
