Marketing and Communications Manager – Children’s Fairyland – Oakland, CA

Children’s Fairyland is a non-profit fairytale-themed park dedicated to providing a magical fantasy world where young children can create, imagine, play, and learn. Fairyland’s 10 acres of landscaped gardens house storybook sets, gentle farm animals, child-size rides, the longest running puppet theatre in America, a renowned children’s theatre program, talking story book boxes activated by the iconic magic key, and much, much more. Attendance exceeds 220,000 visitors annually. For 65 years, Children’s Fairyland has been a valuable and cherished community resource that promotes literacy and celebrates diversity. Fairyland’s Outreach Program leverages the park’s unique resources to serve our region’s low-income and at-risk communities with free or subsidized access.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Marketing and Communications Manager leads the overall efforts to raise awareness about Children’s Fairyland as one of Oakland’s top destinations and community resources for children and families. S/he will focus on media relations; building and maintaining Fairyland’s online presence, including social media, targeted email marketing, and website newsroom updates; cultivating strategic marketing partnerships with local and national organizations; strategizing on-line promotions and writing and editing collateral for distribution. S/He will work in collaboration with the Development Director to ensure that messaging and communication strategies align with membership and fundraising objectives.

Principal Responsibilities

This position will own and manage CFL’s overall marketing and strategic communications efforts during a critical, high-growth period for the park. Duties will include:

SOCIAL MEDIA

Work closely with team members to generate and post content for social media sites (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.)

Develop and implement strategies for marketing/advertising via social media, utilizing available analytics on demographics and audience behavior
Identify, create and manage online discount offers (Groupon, LivingSocial) to reach budget goals for maximum impact

MARKETING/COMMUNICATIONS

Coordinate with program managers and graphic designer to determine marketing/communications scope of all projects; manage the production of these projects including timeline coordination, writing, editing, distribution, and tracking results.
Manage editorial production and distribution of hard-copy and electronic marketing communications collateral (e.g. ads, brochures, postcards, flyers, weekend schedules, e-newsletters, one-time email communications, etc.)

Write, edit and distribute CFL’s monthly e-newsletter using Vertical Response
Photograph events and activities throughout the park; obtain photo releases as needed
Update weekly and monthly calendar events in local and online listings
Assist with other organization-related projects as needed

BRAND IDENTITY

Maintain integrity and consistency of CFL’s brand identity graphically and in collateral copy (e.g. logos, design, voice, key messages, etc.)

CONTENT MANAGEMENT

Maintain CFL’s online newsroom, including writing/blogging, updating photos and videos, and curating new content
Generate email marketing campaigns for programs and special events
Plan and prioritize monthly newsletter content based on strategic messaging needs.

PR/MEDIA RELATIONS

Generate, write, edit, and disseminate press releases, media advisories, and press email communications to raise CFL’s media profile
Manage media database and cultivate press relationships
Prepare marketing collateral for media (e.g. handouts and fact sheets)
Act as spokesperson in absence of Executive Director

Requirements

Excellent written and oral communications and good editing skills required.
Fluent computer skills including expertise with both PC operating systems and standard software programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and photo and video editing software.
Fluent in social media platforms including Hootsuite, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube.
Superior interpersonal skills (interfacing with multiple departments), and working with senior staff and Board of Directors.
Proven team player, with flexibility in working hours.
Minimum bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations or related discipline.
2+ years relevant experience
Community involvement, youth development and/or early education knowledge is a plus. The ability to translate information into creative, fun and professional written, spoken or visual tools is essential.
Comfortable with public speaking
Proven time-management skills; ability to meet rigorous deadlines required.
Quality, timeliness and accuracy of all work essential.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to successfully anticipate, coordinate and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Additional Equipment and software skills desired:

HD video camera, SLR Digital Camera, image editing software (Adobe Photoshop) Final Cut Pro (or iMovie) video editing software

Compensation

Salary for this position is commensurate with other non-profit organizations and will be commensurate with experience with the top of range an annual salary of $41,000.

Hours and days:

Forty hours per week; Tuesday through Saturday: occasional evenings and Sundays as needed.
