COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

THE OPPORTUNITY

Audubon Canyon Ranch (ACR) is seeking a Communications Manager who will manage ACR’s communications, marketing and public relations. This position reports directly to the Director of Development and Communications, is a key member of the Development and Communications Department, and works closely with both staff and Directors.

For more than 50 years, Audubon Canyon Ranch has been dedicated to connecting people to preservation through education and science. ACR’s preserves include the Cypress Grove Research Center on Tomales Bay, the 535-acre Bouverie Preserve in Sonoma’s Valley of the Moon near Glen Ellen, the 1,000-acre Martin Griffin Preserve on Bolinas Lagoon near Stinson Beach, and the 3,300-acre Modini Mayacamas Preserves above Healdsburg.

ACR is an independent non-profit with 501(c)3 status and is not affiliated with the National Audubon Society. ACR’s programs are made possible thanks to the contribution of thousands of hours of volunteer service, and donations from caring individuals, foundations and businesses.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Manager uses strong writing and engagement skills to broaden awareness of and involvement in ACR’s work, provide vital information to stakeholders, generate important conversations, refresh and expand our media, and be proactive in promoting and inspiring our target audiences. Designs and implements effective internal and external communications strategies for ACR. Works closely with cross-functional staff and the ACR Development and Communications Team to explore and develop opportunities through multiple communications strategies that promote the mission of ACR. Key areas of concentration include: communications with supporters and community (promoting our brand, informing our stakeholders, developing collateral materials); web and social media; directed marketing and promotion that supports a wide variety of education and conservation programs and activities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications and Marketing:

Works with the Director of Development and Communications in conjunction with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, staff, committees and volunteers to attract, cultivate and retain donors by raising awareness and the profile of ACR.

Design and execution of marketing, communications and public relations plans and actions that include traditional, online, and social media.

Designs and prepares materials to market ACR to donors, community members, professional advisors, prospective donors and agencies. Produces external communications including but not limited to biannual newsletter, annual report, fact sheets, brochures, monthly e-newsletter, advertisements, outreach materials, the ACR blog, and press releases.
Maintains strong internal communication with departments in order to best communicate messages to the public.
Maintains and updates ACR’s website in partnership with a website design consultant.
Develops and maintains a presence for ACR on frequently used and appropriate social media outlets such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Vimeo and YouTube.
Advertising and branding knowledge ensuring consistency of brand identity across all platforms.
Layout and design knowledge.
Familiarity with and ability to use design software (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)
Understand how different kinds of people react to words, pictures, and ideas.

Community Relations:

Cultivates relationships with press and media outlets.
Assists the Development and Communications Team with fundraising efforts undertaken by ACR (annual fund, sponsorships, and memberships).
Represents ACR as a resource to the community.
Communicates with conviction when speaking and writing.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Degree in communications, marketing, journalism or a related field.

Minimum of 4 years experience developing and managing marketing and communications plans.
Demonstrated success as a marketing and communications professional with the ability to effectively create and implement plans in media relations, marketing, and communications.
Experience in publication layout/production.
Knowledge of and keen interest in social media platforms.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information effectively to diverse audiences.
Ability to meet deadlines, work both collaboratively and independently, be both flexible and highly organized.
Experience working with co-workers, board members, donors, volunteers and program staff on collaborative activities.
Commitment to ACR’s mission of land preservation, nature education, and conservation science.
Exercise good judgment and decision-making.

This position is 4 days per week, salaried, with exempt status. Competitive salary and benefits. Office will be located at one of ACR’s nature preserves, to be determined.
