POSITION SUMMARY

As You Sow seeks a Communications Manager to lead the Communications Department and lead our efforts in messaging, media outreach, organizational branding, and strategic communication to further our environmental and social programs.

This position requires experience with all forms of media outreach including: earned, social, web based, and email marketing. The Communications Manager will manage Communications Department staff and work collaboratively with Program staff to use media and messaging for strategic change on issues including Climate, Environmental Health, Pay Equity, Waste, and Human Rights. The Communications Manager will also coordinate with Development staff in crafting consistent messaging and brand image for the organization with foundation funders, individual donors, general audiences, and other constituencies.

This position requires critical insights into corporate social and environmental advocacy, media relations, and social media. It also requires the ability to manage multiple projects on multiple timelines including As You Sow publications, media outreach on 50+ ongoing corporate resolutions, and proxy votes.

The ideal candidate will be an independent self-starter who has a keen attention to detail and is a strategic thinker able to use comms as a programmatic tool, communicative, flexible, curious, and has a positive attitude. Experience in branding, advertising, launching tech start-ups, video, journalism, blogging and other skills are all a plus. Responsibilities:

Work with Program staff on strategic use of communications to bring about corporate change on a range of social and environmental issues
Work with Development staff on communications promoting the organization in support of fundraising from foundations and individuals
Create and maintain Communications calendar for organization’s multiple program areas allowing strategic campaigns to support corporate resolutions and proxy votes while building new constituencies and outreach among emerging issues.
Lead press outreach, working with program staff on press release drafting as well as pitching, distribution and follow-up
Coordinate with outside PR and media consultants as necessary
Supervise Communications Associate to track and continuously update database of press coverage and media contacts relevant to each program area and As You Sow
Cultivate strong, positive relationships with media contacts in areas related to program and organizational goals
Build on existing social media strategy, implement, and track
Develop and manage project plans for all communications projects
Publish periodic materials (e.g., newsletter, marketing emails) for external distribution, including managing staff input and distributing printed and electronic versions
Support Development department with donor emails, creation of fundraising collateral materials, and earned media reports for foundation grant reports
Oversee Comms Associate to maintain tools for communications and marketing, such as a media research database, email service, and program media tracking
Manage website, including working with staff on content development and benchmarking website analytics
Maintain knowledge of best practices in nonprofit and for-profit communications through professional development activities online and in person
Coordinate with staff on speaking engagements at conferences and webinars, including providing visual presentation support as necessary
Maintain brand cohesiveness through all print and onlinematerials
Maintain guidelines on As You Sow branding and standard language

Qualifications:

Experience with traditional and social media outreach and strategy required
Excellent writing and editing skills (please submit writing samples)
Strong project management skills
A high level of competence in MS Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint
HTML, WordPress, and Salsa experience a strong plus
Experience using Facebook and Twitter
Detail oriented and highly committed to quality
Experience managing consultants such as graphic and web designers
Highly organized and able to prioritize in a fast-paced environment
Self-motivated and committed to excellence
Desire to learn about corporate social responsibility and As You Sow’s issue areas
Desire to work with an organization dedicated to making positive change in the world

Compensation: Negotiable depending on experience.
