Chief Financial Officer – New Directions for Veterans – Los Angeles, CA

Summary:Reporting to the President & CEO, and serving as a key member of the senior leadership team, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) sets the overall financial direction for New Directions for Veterans.

The CFO will provide guidance and big picture thinking to the CEO, and to the Finance Committee of the Board, to ensure that sound fiscal policies are in force and, future sustainability for the organization. S/He has executive oversight of all financial planning, accounting, asset management, and control systems.

The CFO will play a key role in implementing the infrastructure and systems needed to support NDI’s strategic plan and substantial growth over the next three to five years.

Duties:

Financial Management

Serves as strategic business partner with the President & CEO overseeing all aspects of finances and asset management
With the Executive team, develop strategic options that support the NDI mission, ensuring that the economic model of the organization and underlying systems and structures effectively support NDI’s programmatic work.
Provide recommendations to enhance NDVet’s investment performance and revenue opportunities. Provide leadership in the development and continuous evaluation of short and long-term financial objectives.
Lead annual budgeting process, and manage the timely development of an annual budget. Work directly with Executive team members to prepare and understand departmental budgets. Work with the Treasurer and the CEO to prepare Board presentations.
Ensure that effective internal controls are in place, compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws. Manage NDI’s annual audit, generation of financial statements and timely submission of legally required filings and tax documents.
Supervise finance staff’s accounts payable/receivable, cash management and payroll functions; ensure expenses are allocated to appropriate units and projects.
Provide actionable analysis for financial performance, trends and long –term forecasts.
Create/enhance systems for tracking lobbying expenses, and for grant reporting.
Strategize and recommend ways in which NDVets can improve fiscal efficiency and effectiveness.

Oversee all risk management and implementation of Risk Management Plan.
Serve on the Grant Management Team, and provide detailed input in funding opportunities and grants management.

Operations

Enhance and enforce operations policies and procedures including purchasing, security and safety procedures.
Manage all NDI’s leases and contracts for office space, vehicles and other service providers such as internet, insurance and banking.
Manage IT staff and/or external consultants,
Oversee purchasing
Maintain functioning, up-to-date IT systems.
Maintain phone and internet systems, and implement systems for remote communication,
Support development staff with consolidation and use of contact and donor tracking databases; ensure integration with finance and administration systems,
Oversee food service and facility management operations.

Legal

Serve as liaison to NDI’s outside counsel; seek legal assistance as necessary.
Oversee risk management and legal activities: letters of agreement, contracts, leases, and other legal documents and agreements.
Oversee business insurance including General Liability and Directors and Officers.
Standardize contracts with vendors;

Job Requirements:

Experience with government, private, and public funds and contracts.
Must spot financial issues/problems, determine resolutions, and present the plan. Can’t wait for the Finance Committee to suggest that we are running out of cash and require a detail cash flow presentation.
A real resolution orientation.
Assure needed systems are in place to guaranty security of information, timely payments made, asset protection.
Must be able to drive the Finance Committee, and work closely with the Board of Directors
Run the annual budget process effectively.
Produce reliable monthly financial statements and critical support documents.
Key to financial presentations/analysis is the ability to pull out line items and discuss positive and problematic trends
Produce meaningful financial analysis and strategy
Challenge expenses. Look for way to improve this area and communicate.
Very familiar with standard audit procedures.
The CFO will have at least ten years of professional experience most recently as a senior financial manager, including managing the finance and administration of a high-growth, with preference given to those with experience in organizations with budgets of at least $10M
Previous experience managing most of the following functions is required: treasury, information technology, procurement, office administration and facilities management
Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people and systems
Demonstrated leadership and team management ability
Proficiency with financial management software; Financial Edge preferred
Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; exceptional project management skills and overall execution orientation
Strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate a high level of responsibility and multiple priorities
Flexibility and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends to meet deadlines
Strong experience in grant management, and housing development financing, as well as asset management.
Dedication and commitment to the mission of serving veterans.

Bachelor’s degree; CPA, MA/MBA preferred
