Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation is a national racial justice organization with offices in New York, NY and Oakland, CA. Founded in 1981, Race Forward takes an accessible, solutions-­focused approach to race and a variety of issues. Our biggest media product is Colorlines, a daily news site where race matters. We also present a biennial conference, Facing Race, which is devoted to racial justice movement making, and alliance building.

Race Forward seeks a Finance and Operations Assistant based in our New York City office to provide significant support in the areas of bookkeeping and office management.

Responsibilities

Finance and Accounting

Review coding (chart of accounts) and process accounts payable invoices. Ensure invoices are approved by the appropriate staff person.
Reconcile credit card charges and collect backup documentations on a monthly basis.
Review staff travel reimbursements.
Track consultant contracts and payments.
Prepare deposits of payments and contributions.
Track, order and distribute staff monthly Metro Card benefit.
Prioritize conflicting needs; handle matters expeditiously, proactively, and follow through on projects to successful completion, often with deadline pressures.

Meeting Logistics

Manage all logistics required for various internal and external live and online meetings and attend these meetings as required.
Train others to use meeting-related technologies.

Office Administration

Maintain effective relationships with internal vendors, including building office and staff.
Orientation to the office for new staff, track and manage office keys and building entry passes.
Maintain staff phone, contact and distribution lists.
Manage the inventory and ordering of supplies, answering phone inquiries.
Accept and review incoming mail and maintain appropriate filing systems.
Respond to inquiries from the public regarding Race Forward and refer inquiries to staff as appropriate.
Maintain finance and administration filing system.

Qualifications

Minimum of 2 years bookkeeping and operations experience in a fast paced environment (a must)
Post secondary education/training in accounting, finance, management or administration.
GAAP, nonprofit accounting, internal controls and audit experience all pluses.
Strong computer skills and thorough knowledge of the following applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Gmail, Google Drive, Social Media, Web meetings (WebEex esp.).
Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, coordinate efficiently and respond quickly to changing priorities. High level of organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. Ability to interact and work flexibly with others. A sense of humor will really help.
Interest in the movements for racial justice and equity.

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting, talking/listening and keying at a computer for 6+ hours per day.
Moving, standing, climbing, balancing, bending, and reaching with arms and hands up for up to 3 hours per day.
Lifting up to 20 lbs.
Exposure to EMR.
