Legal Assistant – Bilingual (English/Spanish) – Catholic Charities of Oregon – Portland, OR

The mission of Catholic Charities’ Immigration Legal Services is to provide high quality immigration legal services to low-income immigrants and refugees, and to engage in public education, training and community outreach.

Position funded by USDOJ, OVW Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Grant, #2011-WR-AX-0004

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist attorneys and accredited representatives in representing Immigration Legal Services clients.
• Manage Rural Program waitlist and assist clients with initial stages of case preparation.
• Provide administrative support to the Rural Program, including data entry in immigration legal software, scheduling client appointments, and data tracking for grant-reporting purposes.
• Engage in frequent written and oral correspondence with clients, potential clients, and third parties, including law enforcement agencies, domestic violence agencies, and other social service providers.
• Assist Pro Bono Coordinator to distribute and monitor pro bono cases.
• Other duties as assigned, including: translate documents, prepare client declarations, and interpret for clients at government interviews.
• Participate in outreach visits, trainings, and education events in rural counties in Oregon. Assist in producing outreach and educational materials about the program. Travel may be required.
• Assist Rural Program Coordinator to produce grant reports for the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women.
• Assist with day-to-day administration of grant-related matters.
• Reports to Rural Program Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must be fluent (spoken and written) in English and Spanish.
• High attention to detail.
• Excellent written and oral communication and editing skills.
• Word Processing, Excel database/spreadsheet and advanced computer skills required, experience with legal software preferred.
• Ability to work independently, yet seek supervision appropriately.
• Ability to work well with others under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Previous work experience with and desire to work with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
• Cultural competency with low-income immigrant groups and a strong desire to work with this population.
