Training Coordinator – Urban Upbound (East River Development Alliance) – Astoria, NY

Founded in 2004, the mission of Urban Upbound is to provide residents of public housing neighborhoods the tools and resources needed to achieve economic mobility and self-sufficiency, and to break cycles of poverty.

Urban Upbound advances its mission through five integrated programs: employment services, financial counseling, youth development/college and career access, the Urban Upbound Federal Credit Union, and community revitalization services.

Opened in Astoria Houses in 2013, Jobs-Plus is a proven place-based employment program designed to increase the earnings and employment of working age public housing residents. Jobs-Plus uses a three pronged approach which includes: employment-related services; financial incentives that make work pay; and community supports for work, the strengthening of social ties among residents and community stakeholders to support residents’ job preparation and work efforts.

Reporting to the Manager of Education and Career Training, the Training Coordinator is a key member of the Urban Upbound Jobs-Plus team, coordinating work readiness and career training opportunities for unemployed and employed residents of Astoria Houses.

Responsibilities

Developing high-impact, innovative curriculum and conducting 1-on-1 coaching sessions and/or group workshops with members on topics such as creating a resume, acing the interview, job search techniques, building a positive social media presences, etc.;
Liaising with community-based and educational institution partners to recruit for, refer and follow members through successful completion of training programs;
Developing individualized case-management strategies to ensure members complete training programs and submit certification/license verification documents;
Referring members to educational, financial, career advancement, and social support opportunities offered by program partners;
Collaborating with outreach staff to design and market training opportunities to residents;
Tracking data and progress in Efforts To Outcomes (ETO) database; and
Other tasks as assigned by the Manager of Education and Career Training and Urban Upbound leadership.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Human Resources, Instructional Design or related field required
Minimum of two years of experience in education, human resources, workforce development, or related field
Exceptional facilitation skills, with ability to engage an adult audience and present content clearly using relatable examples and analogies
Proven ability to apply a variety of instructional techniques such as role playing, simulations, team exercises, group discussions, videos, and lectures to real-world-of-work situations and debrief activities to arrive at learning outcomes
Strong project management skills, including managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines
Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Internet Research, and social media
Outcomes-driven, strong analytical skills with experience using data to inform programmatic decisions
Highly motivated, with proven capacity to work independently, take initiative, and thrive in high-paced entrepreneurial environment
Flexible, with availability to work a weeknight and occasional Saturdays
Bi-lingual Spanish preferred
Passion for social justice
