Coordinator for Low Wage Worker Justice – Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) – Oakland, CA

The Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) is seeking a full-time Campaign Coordinator to drive the organization’s work to implement Oakland’s recently passed minimum wage & paid sick days law, win “fair work week” protections and advance other policies to help low wage workers and begin managing an effort to build a base of low wage workers organizing for change throughout Oakland and the Bay Area.

About ACCE ACCE is a multi-issue, membership-based community organization building the power and voice of poor and working families across the state of California. With offices in 6 cities, ACCE works in local communities and statewide to fight for economic, racial and social justice. ACCE’s grassroots approach prioritizes training and empowering community residents from across the state to wage effective bottom-up campaigns that prioritize community action and direct action, as well as policy work and lobbying.

We seek an individual with a passion for economic justice and experience in both policy work and labor organizing and someone who is energetic, can overcome obstacles and work in a fast paced environment. A strong candidate need not bring immediate expertise on low wage worker policy issues, but must have experience organizing workers and of labor issues and campaigns. The work will initially be based entirely in the Oakland-Emeryville area but will expand to a regional model over time.

Position location: Oakland

Primary Responsibilities: The candidate will report to ACCE’s Oakland Director

Anchor the organization’s work on low wage worker issues at the local and regional level: working with allies to ensure full implementation of Oakland’s new Minimum Wage & Paid Sick Day policy that ACCE Action helped to win and exploring new policies to level the playing field for low wage workers in Oakland and throughout the region
Manage and train between 1-3 staff members to outreach to low wage workers/organize intakes for workers to inform them about new Minimum Wage Law in Oakland/mobilize workers to these intakes and get them involved with ACCE and efforts to pass policies that help level the playing field for workers throughout Oakland/the region
Develop a committee of worker-leaders who will begin to fight for workplace issues, advocate for increased policies and become part of ACCE’s overall work
Spending some period of time in the field with staff in order to reach goals and build direct relationships with the workers

Job Requirements:

Experience working on policy campaigns driven by community, labor or other social justice organizations;
At least 3 years experience in labor organizing (this experience must include time spent on external organizing/direct organizing)
Deep understanding of issues facing communities of color, and low-and moderate-income families;
Experience building and working with broad-based issue coalitions;
Comfort with the implementation of a range of campaign strategies and tactics, ranging from legislative campaigns to corporate campaigns, from electoral work to digital organizing;
Excellent communication skills;
Excellent organizational skills – good attention to detail and well organized;
Self-motivated – proven ability to work independently and overcome obstacles;
Ability to work well with diverse groups and populations;
Dedication and ability to work flexible hours;
Spanish/English bilingual preferred but not required.
