Assistant Editor – Zocalo Public Square – Santa Monica, CA

Zócalo Public Square, the Los Angeles-based nonprofit Ideas Exchange that blends live events and humanities journalism, seeks a driven and dynamic Assistant Editor to join our team.

We’re looking for an editor who excels at eliciting people’s stories and collaborating closely with writers and non-writers to craft compelling narratives–and who possesses a deep passion for people, big ideas, place and community, and California. The Assistant Editor will be responsible for assigning and line editing stories, and for providing support to our editorial team on shepherding articles through our publication process–from conception to posting to promoting. The Assistant Editor will also be a part of our events team–working on programming, as well as writing and editing event descriptions, event rundowns, interviews, and other related content. Zócalo’s offices are located in Santa Monica and the organization is a proud affiliate of Arizona State University. Last year, we produced events in 10 cities and published over 700 articles that we syndicated to over 160 media outlets—including The Washington Post, USA Today, [[http:Time.com|Time.com]], Forbes, Fast Company, the San Francisco Chronicle, Houston Chronicle, and Sacramento Bee.

This is a terrific opportunity for an ambitious, creative editor to become part of a thriving, innovative Los Angeles institution with a fun-loving team. Previous experience in journalism or new media preferred. The Zócalo Assistant Editor must commit to long hours and weekend and evening work.

Interested applicants should send cover letter, resume, and writing and/or editing samples to jobs@zocalopublicsquare.org . Please include “Assistant Editor” in the subject line.
