SONYC (Middle School After School) Program Director – YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood – New York, NY

A destination for culture, education and compassionate support since 1917, the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood (“the Y”) elevates the lives of our diverse and evolving Washington Heights and Inwood community through programming and service informed by universal Jewish values. With over 50 years of experience managing After School Programs in the neighborhood, we are proudly operating two, OST Middle School on-site After School Programs in partnership with schools in District 5 & 6. We are currently looking to replace one of our Program Directors.

The Program Director is responsible for developing, implementing and managing the daily activities of our SONYC program, currently serving over 200 middle schoolers. The Directors’ primary responsibility will be to work with staff, middle school colleagues, including the principal, children, parents, and other Y Program Managers, as well as other youth serving agencies to collaborate and advocate for SONYC participants, and ensure the smooth functioning of all aspects of this new program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Based at school site, will facilitate SONYC’s integration within the school administration, structure and culture, and allow for efficiencies in working with the Educational Specialist;
Serve as a member of School Leadership Team, and participate in Grade Team meetings;
With the Managing Director, review and update curriculum, educational objectives, and program design as necessary;
Develop, administer and monitor program budget;
Consistently strategize, design and implement outreach efforts to keep program at full enrollment;
Ensure effective administrative systems are in place to support SONYC, including mechanisms for tracking participation and demographics, and supervising the reporting on contract;
Work with SONYC staff and school staff to ensure that SONYCclassrooms, and other programming areas are clean and well-maintained;
Oversee development of and adherence to agency emergency instructions and plans;
Oversee the purchasing and maintenance of food, art and other supplies;
Screen, interview and orient families to SONYC;
Conduct parent and parent/child conferences as necessary;
Oversee integration of children with disabilities and special needs into SONYC program;
Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and supervise all SONYC staff, including Program Coordinator, Program Administrator, Service Learning Coordinator, Activity Specialists, Group Leaders and others as assigned;
Provide ongoing coaching and constructive feedback to staff. Evaluate staff per Y evaluation policy procedures and timeframe;
Oversee coordination of program schedules, calendar, and vacation coverage;
Review annually and update handbooks, applications, contracts and other related paperwork;
Oversee development and implementation of daily programming;
Coordinate regular communication with SONYC families;
Develop and support SONYC staff in the coordination of special events;
Together with the Managing Director, foster parental and community support to provide feedback on the SONYC’s mission and program goals, and to serve as ambassadors for the SONYC program;
Oversee compliance with SONYC standards;
Facilitate effective coordination between the program and other Y departments;
Complete all Y system-wide reporting and paperwork requirements in a timely manner, including payroll materials, departmental goals and work plans, budget preparation, tracking materials, employment paperwork, and others as needed;
Be committed to the mission and goals of the Y. Participate in and promote Y events and programs outside of own department;

REQUIREMENTS:

Spanish fluency;
Master’s degree in a relevant field;
Minimum of three years of demonstrated success in a supervisory role;
Strong administrative skills, including strong computer and technology proficiency;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Excellent time management and multi-tasking abilities;
Previous experience in curriculum and program development;
Knowledge of youth development theories and practices;
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with a broad spectrum of staff, volunteers, and program participants;
Ability to maintain or supervise the maintenance of financial and other records
Current First Aid and CPR certification, as well as required Health & Safety training preferred.
