Hiring Announcement: advancing community approaches to mental health and well-being
We are looking for a Program Manager or Director to join our team who is committed to improving health and safety and reducing inequities through a focus on prevention. The primary focus area of this position will be on advancing our work on mental health and well-being, particularly for men and boys through community-level, community-driven prevention approaches. This position will include responsibility for leadership, oversight, supervision, and implementation of projects; advancing practice and policy; and shared responsibilities within the organization.
Prevention Institute’s approach to mental health and well-being focuses on understanding how strategies at the community level can support improved outcomes for mental health. This position will oversee a new PI initiative that will include working with 8-10 community sites to develop and implement strategic plans and leveraging the work on this project with other relevant initiatives, including those internal to PI as well as external. This position will also have responsibilities for other PI work that is related to this initiative including, for example, injury and trauma prevention and/or health equity and/or physical activity initiatives.
Key Domains of Responsibility include
Project Lead for a national initiative to support the mental health and well-being of men and boys. Working with a team, the project director will be responsible for enhancing the capacity of 8-10 sites to develop and implement community-level plans to improve mental health and well-being for men and boys; foster improved outcomes in the 8-10 communities; synthesize the learnings of this effort and foster greater commitment to and understanding of the mental health needs and strategies that advance the well-being of the core populations of the effort (e.g. boys and men of color in disenfranchised communities, enlisted men and veterans, and fathers/families) – on a national as well as international level; and deepen the resources and commitment on an ongoing basis to community mental health work for boys and men, and particularly for the populations focused on in this effort, as a result of this work. More specifically, this position will direct site selection and grant administration; capacity building of sites to develop and implement effective plans; coordination of key partners involved in the initiative and making connections with complementary, synergistic and related partners and initiatives; foster a community of practice; capture and disseminate the lessons learnt; work closely with and represent the funder in this work over the course of the project; leverage the funder’s investment to foster understanding about and catalyze action on community-level approaches to men’s mental health and well-being.
Training and Consultation: Provide training, technical assistance and strategy development based on our mental health, injury and trauma prevention, health equity and/or other prevention approaches and frameworks.
Promote PI Work and Principles: Represent PI’s vision and priorities in meetings with other organizations/agencies; Conceptualize and author Prevention Institute documents for various key audiences with appropriate consultation; Co-author concept papers, grant proposals, and articles for publication; Advance, develop and/or disseminate prevention tools.
Advance Partnership and Resource Development: Develop new and/or supplement existing funding streams to support our work; Work with funders to develop and negotiate workplans / timelines; Provide input in developing new projects and critical partnerships; Maintain effective communication as appropriate with funders; Meet with current and prospective funders (independently or with senior leadership) to describe PI’s work and pitch potential projects; Work with senior leaders to conceptualize grant elements and prepare successful grant proposals that strategically meet the goals of the organization and advance the field; Manage and strengthen organizational partnerships related to health equity and prevention.
Organizational Development: Establish and maintain effective lines of communication between staff and encourage appropriate strategies and techniques for managing workplace challenges; Manage and/or implement new and ongoing systems and structures to assure organizational effectiveness
Staff Supervision and Development:Supervise staff members; Supervise work of designated project team members toward effective fulfillment of project goals and deliverables
A minimum of 5-8 year’s relevant experience and a master’s degree in a relevant field or comensurate experience; the title and position, i.e. program manager or director, in the organization will be determined by the candidate’s experience
Ability to provide project leadership/management, ensuring high quality, timely deliverables that meet funding requirements and advance Prevention Institute goals and visibility
Understanding of community-level, community-driven approaches to improve health and mental health outcomes, particularly for communities with the greatest need
Expertise on men’s mental health and well-being and the role of masculinity and ability to infuse this understanding into program design and implementation
Ability to incorporate PI tools, approaches and methods into a national initiative and community capacity building
Ability to work in and with diverse community partners
Ability to work closely with a funding partner
Analytical and problem-solving capabilities; Ability to synthesize information and approaches
Excellent writing skills
Effective oral communication skills, including for training and consultation and in meetings
Well-organized, attention to detail, and able to meet deadlines
