Membership Director – Aceum Advisors & Search, LLC – New York

The Opportunity
The Membership Director is responsible for executing the Membership program’s goals through planning, development, and completion of all GLAAD’s direct mail and stewardship strategies. The Membership Director will be expected to raise $500,000 – $850,000 in direct appeal contributions and renewals and will work alongside Major Gifts, Strategic Partnerships, and Foundations staff to meet the Development department’s annual revenue goal.
The Membership Director will also maintain a regular schedule of individualized donor communications, produce communications content to ensure all donors understand the impact of their gifts, and oversee all methods of donor acknowledgement and recognition. This position reports to the Chief Development Officer and will be part of a national development team responsible for raising over $7.2 million in annual contributions from individuals, corporate partners, and foundations, with plans to significantly increase that amount in coming years.

Key Responsibilities
Meet or exceed Membership revenue goal of $500,000 – $850,000 associated with direct mail, e-appeals, renewals and Membership campaigns
Develop a detailed calendar of direct marketing and stewardship activities, and monitor calendar for status and completion of tasks
Manage the annual Membership budget, including tracking of quarterly and annual budget compliance, consistently looking for creative ways to lower the cost of fundraising. Track all membership gifts in conjunction with the Finance department
Organize and distribute quarterly communications to current donors to increase donor engagement and retention
Develop and implement innovative programs and projects to thank and steward donors
Develop and implement new donor acknowledgement system — draft thank you letters, receipts, pledge statements, and implement system for cultivation calls for increased donor retention
Provide support to the Development team including but not limited to drafting, editing and proofreading member and stewardship correspondence, and report compilation and analysis
Manage internal data pulls, review of direct marketing and stewardship package design and vendor relationships; manage extraction/segmentations of mailings and coding of membership level gifts
Conduct project research and enter and track donor relations and stewardship activities in Raiser’s Edge
Track direct mail marketing, e-appeals, and other direct mail campaign performance broken down by segment, indicating response rates, gift levels, cost per piece, and net revenue, produce weekly and monthly reports with this information, analyzing membership trends and results
Manage weekly and monthly gift collections efforts
Work cross-departmentally, including with I.T. department, to implement reliable and successful electronic membership and stewardship campaigns
Provide direction and supervision of the Membership Coordinator
Manage an annual acquisition test program with GLAAD’s direct marketing agency, and incorporate findings into future piece creation
Manage the production of donor base reports based on selected giving histories and demographic data
Participate in staff meetings, planning meetings, and other meetings as needed
May assume other related responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Development Officer
Candidate Profile | Competencies | Personal Qualities

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent level of professional work experience
Minimum of five (5) years of direct mail, telemarketing and e-appeal experience with a strong preference given to those with previous experience working in a direct mail marketing agency,
Prior experience in a membership setting in direct mail, e-appeals, and/or telemarketing
Database processing experience, preferably in direct marketing environment
Demonstrated success at meeting or exceeding clearly defined revenue goals

Understanding of and/or interest in history and current issues concerning the representation of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities in the media

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to attend meetings at various sites within and away from the city as necessary, including nationwide travel as necessary
Availability to work off-hours shifts or events as required
Strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 40 pounds
Ability to work outdoors and indoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.
