Educational Americorps Positions working with Immigrant Youth – Oakland International High School

Key Responsibilities
1. Help orient newly-arrived students to the school (providing school tours, teaching students how to use their email and lockers, and connecting students to the library and wellness resources)
2. Support new students’ connections to the Wellness Center, ensuring they are connected to staff and services that best support their needs.
3. Organize, in conjunction with student leaders, monthly Wellness Events for students and families, in collaboration with Wellness Team and student leaders, including monthly food bank giveaways, volunteer work days, and healthcare enrollment days.
4. Participate in regularly-scheduled Wellness Team meetings and trainings (one hour, every other week
5. Work with student wellness leadership committee to plan and announce events to students and families
6. Provide home-work and school-work help through small group tutoring in the library during class pull-outs and after school
7. Host “reading clubs” for students at various grade levels to support their reading growth and engagement with literacy
8. Connect students to grade-appropriate books and oversee checkout system, in collaboration/with input from teacher
9. Create and implement reading awards system to recognize student progress, incentivize student reading, deepen a culture of reading at OIHS
10. Support with reading and lexile data analysis and reports
Academic Support Americorps Member (3 positions)
To provide academic support, mentoring and tutoring OIHS’s newly-arrived immigrant students, supplementing support during school hours and after school
Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to support students with interrupted formal education (SIFE) and assisting students with class assignments.
Provide tutoring in the afterschool program, a dynamic drop-in program where students get homework help and practice English with supportive adult staff and volunteer tutors
Provide support to teachers by setting up work areas and displays, operating audio-visual equipment, distributing papers and supplies.
Gather and provide data that will be used by teachers, staff and researchers to assess students and teaching methods used in the classroom/school
Communicate expectations, provide guidance and show an active interest in student progress while striving to develop a rapport and serve as a positive role model for students and others.
Perform clerical duties such as making copies, scoring papers, recording data, prepare and maintain files as assigned.
Attend and actively participate in staff and OIHS Learning Lab professional development meetings and retreats.
Media Academy Americorps Member
Goal: To support the work and reach of the OIHS media academy, linking students to industry partners and internships, coordinating events, and supporting students to build their tools and skills in preparation for college and career.

Key Responsibilities
1. Identify & outreach to potential industry sector partners, and connect students to internship sites
2. Serve a liaison between outside partners and the media academy director
3. Work directly with school counselors and media academy director to support students in their internship sites
4. Support Media Academy classes with events such as exhibitions and end of year events
5. Support students with college and career applications, including essay writing, FAFSA application, and scholarship application
6. Visit students at internship sites
7. Support planning for work based learning events (ex. Career Week) and college visits/field trips
8. Support Media Academy with increasing visibility of student work and media academy presence on campus.
9. Connect students to summer learning opportunities on and off campus

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ALL POSITIONS:
Commitment to and interest in working with diverse immigrant communities in an educational context; Interest in and dedication to educational equity, social justice and immigrant rights
Demonstrates ability to effectively engage and support adolescents, in both group and individual settings
Strong organizational capacity and the ability to effectively plan and coordinate projects with minimal supervision
Ability to work in a busy, dynamic environment
Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively
Commitment to the Americorps program; ability to commit to a full year of service
Submit application to BACR and attend all trainings and team days with Americorps
Negative Result on tuberculosis test.
