Director, Donor Relations – The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association – Calabasas Hills, CA

The National Office of The ALS Association is recruiting a Director of Donor Relations who will be based out of The ALS Association’s Golden West Chapter in Los Angeles, California. Reporting to the Vice President of Development of the National Office with accountability to the Vice President of Development of the Golden West Chapter, the successful candidate will work to establish an individual major gifts program with high-potential individuals in the Golden West service area. The Director of Donor Relations will also personally carry a portfolio of 50-100 prospects and actively manage relationships with those prospects. The position will be responsible for meeting or exceeding established individual performance goals as well as serve as key member of the development team.

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Build and facilitate relationships with individuals and family foundations for the purpose of raising gifts of $10,000 or more, with an emphasis on high-five, six and seven-figure donors and prospects.

Develop written proposals and business cases for major donor approaches around specific Association program areas, especially in care services, research and public policy.

Contact donors to personally acknowledge gifts received by The Association and respond to inquiries initiated by donors and prospects.

Collaborate with the National Office Vice President of Development, the National Office Director of Gift Planning and the Golden West Chapter Vice President of Development to identify and solicit planned gifts as part of major donor portfolio work.

Engage volunteer champions and build a committee structure to effectively recruit, retain, and grow individual gifts.

Develop a robust thanking and informing engagement programs.

Provide counsel and leadership to Golden West development staff in the areas of major gifts and planned giving, including strategy development and execution, donor visits, volunteer management and solicitations, as needed.

Monitor and implement activities, assess effectiveness, adjust strategies, and provide leadership to ensure achievement of performance goals. Regularly develop new fundraising programs and initiatives for implementation in building a world-class major giving program.

Demonstrate behaviors in concert with The Association’s mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures. Adhere to strict confidentiality policies in handling donor information. Build and maintain positive working relationships and communications with all Association constituencies.

Participate as a senior member of the Development team, including attending meetings and special events; developing strategies for donor approaches with other members of the Development team; collaborating with others in the Department and in other Association Departments; and preparing analysis and written reports, as needed.

Convey a professional and positive image at all times that reflects favorably on The ALS Association.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree of equivalent combination of education and work experience required. CFRE preferred.
Minimum of 7-10 years development experience with extensive face-to-face major gift and planned giving experience. Proven track record of closing major gifts and meeting fundraising goals is required.
Ability to quickly develop rapport and strong relationships with donors.
A desire and accompanying skill set to build a high performing program.
Ability to work independently and collegially in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment.
Excellent leadership, communication, and managerial skills. Strong written, verbal, telephone, and interpersonal skills. Outstanding listening skills are a must. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
A comfort level with technology that includes a desktop or laptop computer, fundraising database, and high volume of email messages is important.
Willingness and ability to travel extensively within Golden West’s service area. Additionally travel would include occasional visits to National Office and attendance at Association events as required or requested.
