Community Renewal Society (CRS) is a faith-based organization that works with people and communities to address racism and poverty. CRS transforms society towards greater justice and compassion through our growing network of diverse congregations that fight for racial and economic justice through powerful, direct action campaigns. Our organization is on the leading edge of fighting for justice in the criminal justice system, addressing educational inequality, and fighting for economic justice.
This is a full time position that organizes current and new Community Renewal Society member congregations on the West side and Western suburbs, and leads organizational campaigns and coalitions. The ideal candidate will be an experienced organizer with a strong background working in with African-American communities and congregations and winning direct action campaigns.
Lead campaign work, including building Issue Teams and working with leaders to create winning strategies and move into action.
Convene a coalitional table of partner organizations around a key campaign.
Assist in creating campaign trainings, tools, and materials for CRS leadership.
Organize new and existing member congregations on the West side and in the Western suburbs of Chicago.
Identify, train, and develop leaders in new and existing member congregations.
Build core Faith in Action teams in each member congregation.
Turn out large numbers of leaders for organizational actions.
Work with leaders in member congregations to identify social justice issues affecting their communities.
Work with leaders in member congregations to develop campaign strategies and execute actions for justice campaigns.
Work to ensure high turnout of leaders for campaign actions and organization-wide events.
Serve as a trainer for Community Renewal Society’s 3-Day Organizing Training and Confronting Pharaoh Congregational Training.
Recruit leaders and other community residents to participate in trainings.
Recruit and manage organizing interns.
Create an internship structure for CRS.
Develop and maintain relationships with academic institutions, including seminaries and universities that provide interns.
Maintain organizational records.
Manage online communication and advocacy tools.
Attend and staff various CRS events.
3-5 years organizing experience, including running direct action campaigns.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
Experience working in African-American communities and congregations.
Proven ability to work with clergy and people with records.
A passion for social justice and for working with faith based institutions.
Motivation and drive.
Valid IL driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle (frequent local/in-state travel required).
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work flexible hours including some nights and weekends.
