Qualifications:
Committed interest in the protection and expansion of immigrant rights, especially the rights of uniquely vulnerable immigrants;
Current undergraduate or graduate student;
Experience with grassroots organizing, campaign planning, or civic engagement as part of a political, community or campus organization;
Independent, highly organized, and able to meet tight deadlines under pressure;
Bilingual language capacity strongly preferred, especially in Asian of Pacific Island languages and dialects.
Responsibilities:
Assist in the preparation of statewide public awareness campaign around Hawai’i’s new driver’s license and ensure greatest number of residents receive information in an engaging and accessible way;
Expand and deepen engagement of immigrants and other constituent communities in the activities and campaigns of HCIR;
Assist in conducting presentations on immigrant issues among the broader community;
Assist Lead Organizer in advocating for state legislation and state budget requests that impact immigrants and COFA migrants.
What You Will Gain:
Effective community organizing skills that foster activism through mobilizing and recruiting community members and leaders;
Knowledge of State legislative politics: the role of individual legislators within the Legislature, their capacity as representatives, and structural constraints that shape their voting behavior;
Policy advocacy skills through direct involvement in the State lawmaking process;
Introduction to U.S. immigration law and programs.
