HIV Testing Counselor (English/Spanish) – Shalom Health Care Center Inc – Indianapolis, IN

Shalom Health Care Center, Inc., (SHCC), a consumer directed nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Indianapolis seeks full time HIV Testing Counselor (speaks fluent Spanish and English) to conduct HIV testing and counseling to patients in our Primary Care Center and testing/counseling of at-risk clients at various community outreach service locations.

Essential duties: Elicit from patient HIV risk history including, but not limited to, demographic information, sex history, drug and alcohol use, and past STD infections; Administer OraSure test to detect HIV antibodies; collect and process specimen sample in accordance with National, state and local guidelines, as well as Shalom HIV Lab policies and procedures; provide health education and individual risk reduction counseling sessions; promote healthy sexual behaviors and praises risk reduction plans adopted by patient; conduct test result disclosure and post disclosure counseling. as needed and required; document all required information for reporting purposes; properly dispose all biohazard waste in appropriate container; and document in e-CW all patient services provided.

Secondary duties: Scan medical records documentation in to EMR as scheduled or as needed; assist with special projects as directed by Executive Director/CEO, or requested by the Chief Finance Officer, Medical Director/CMO, Human Resource/Operations Director, IT Director and/or QA/QI Director; answer phone calls by the third ring: (a) Transfer calls to appropriate personnel or their voice mail. Page clinic personnel as appropriate; and (b) respond to patient requests for general information about clinic services. Schedule appointments for patients, as needed; serve as back-up for Front Desk Associates, as needed; provide patient counseling on specific topics as directed by the Medical Director/CMO and your immediate supervisor and assist in new employee or intern orientation, as needed.

Education & Qualification Requirements:

High school diploma or GED.
One (1) year Phlebotomy certification from college or technical school; or minimal three (3) years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Current Phlebotomy certification.
Experience delivering Phlebotomy services in outreach and/or community health clinic, preferred.
Demonstrated skills in one-on-one harm reduction counseling.
Fluent in Spanish and English.
Familiarity with health-related and social issues faced by high risk populations.
Empathy for high risk client/patient populations.
Sensitive to the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS.
Valid Driver’s license, ability to drive and means of transportation, as required.

Knowledge, Skill, Ability and Work Difficulty:

Knowledge of AIDS, substance abuse, and Hepatitis-related issues.
Knowledge and experience providing educational outreach in public settings.
Knowledge of Microsoft applications.
Knowledge of EMR (electronic medical records), e-Clinical Works, a plus.
Knowledge of proper specimen collection and processing procedures.
Skilled in communicating openly on sexual topics without prejudice.
Ability to work with minimal and/or remote supervision.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to work weekday, evenings, and weekends, as needed.
Able to work Primary Care Center schedule: Monday & Wednesday – 8a-5:30p; Tuesday & Thursday – 8a-7p (rotational); and Friday – 8a-1p.

Hourly rate: $13.00 – $15.00 based on experience/education.
